Green Hair Algae ?

Recommended Posts

hi, can you advise if this is the green hair algae ? do i need to remove it, and if yes how ? :thanks:

looks like its growing on yr "dead" coral heads....green algae usually is high phosphate or yr carbon dioxide level is high due to some "dead" spots in the tank.

Rough indication of whether you have high/low nutrient load in your tank. Add new rock with slight algae on it into your tank. It grows bigger, you prob have high nutrient load. The algae starts to die and disappear, your nutrient load is relatively low.

Hair algae is relatively stubborn to scrub off, and even after your nutrients are under control, they don't really disappear altogether. Toothbrush works, or some cleaning crew to help eat off the hair algae. My 2 turbo snails have kept my rocks relatively free from algae, albeit some coral shifting while they are doing their work.

This if not remove can spread fast.

If you still want the coral pluck them off.

Otherwise throw the coral away before it start to spread

If grown in your overflow.. Is your lighting above your overflow? if yes then I believe your one should be normal green algae.. Is ok to keep it.. good for nutrient export.. is actually something serve like "Algae Scrubber" function.. I have that on top of my overflow too...Sometime, I spotted nice algae in red color as well... but you need to trim them once getting thicker... otherwise, will become reverse function.. and may result your flow rate deficiency....

Cheers...

Your meaning of reverse function is solely on flow rate deficiency? If that's the only cause then I not that worried.

Well... Will get it trim then if it becomes thicker. Thanks dude!

base on my understanding, beside flow rate deficiency, we also knowing green algae potentially exhibited asexual reproduction especially under stress environment.. If we allowed them wild grown overlapping each others. Under layer which lack of light expose might need to rely on asexual reproduction.. also decaying in long run.. all these may resulted water parameter swing.. Just my hypothesis.. Cheers.. :)
