Hey Bino

Do you feed the rics?

I target feed them once a week with mysis.

They have expanded quite a bit since.

On the contrary, I like rics staying small... the colours are more intense. However, allowing them to grow really huge seems like a challenge worth exploring. :eyebrow:

Some updates:

Sad news... most of my rics melted... I'm inclined to believe that the intensity of the LEDs have something to do with it. Just shifted the remaining ones to a shaded area to test this theory. Before removing the light diffusers, my yuma was doing ok. After removing them, the yuma started to pale in colour. Also shifted it to a shady spot. Will be putting the diffusers back on to see if it helps.

On a lighter note, I think my Yashias are really paired up! After the major re-scape, they got separated, each hiding in a different spot. Just this week, they got back together again! Both would take turns poking their heads out of the hiding spot. Very fun to watch. ^_^

I'm puzzled myself... I have not changed anything except removed the diffusers from the LEDs, so that's the first thing I want to check. My yuma was a good gauge because it has been with me for a long time.

After putting the diffusers back on and shifting the rics to a shady spot, they don't seem to improve much. Still bleached, but at least not melting away. Imagine blue rics are now turquoise in colour! Quite pretty actually, but I think I'd still prefer blue any day. The yuma seems to expand a bit more, but hasn't regained its previous glory.

I have a huge contrast in zoa colours with regards to light, so it definitely plays a part in coral health. The zoas from the same colony had completely different shades of colour between the one placed in the shade and the other out in the open, both being on the sand bed. I'll post pics when I have time.

JBJ Nano Glo works pretty well. Cheato growth is amazing. I'm exploring the possibilities of using it with a scrubber. Stay tuned! ^_^

thanks for the update bro.

For some of my zoas, they took like 2 months to colour up.

I still have a lot of corals faded, currently dosing iodine and just waiting for them to regain colours.

These 2 frags are from the same colony. The first one is placed under a shady area, and the other, out in the open under direct LED lights (both on the sand bed). The difference is even more obvious in person. Notice the colours are much more intense under the shade as compared to the one in the open. The white ring also seems to be thinner.

peace which one you think nicer

in the shade? or out under the LED

the one under the LED seems nicer as the white ring is more intense..

I prefer the one in the shade. My camera (& skills) can't really capture what you see in person. I'll take photos of my pink zoas and compare to the ones I posted some time back. Looks more orangey now...

Woah... peace: do u know how i can get some of these?? nice stuff, especially the one that has luminous skirting (so putting in shady area is better for them huh)....

I'm using the G1 Maxspect 110W with the normal bracket, and tank height being 1.5 Ft, the corals get quite a blast of light. I do not have any PAR meters to obtain some data, so I have to depend on the colours on a trial & error basis. So far, I feel that it is over-powered for my tank. Hopefully, the DE Lighting folks can come up with brackets with height adjustments.

nice bro.

Hey peace how long does it takes in your tank for a 5 polyps frag to double its size?

Thanks! I'm not sure of the growth rate and it varies with different zoas / palys, but it increases if you have more to start with. Definitely much faster with LEDs as compared to my previous T5 HOs. Zoa growth > Paly growth for my tank.

Some pics of my fraging process...

IME, it is fairly easy cutting zoas off from the acrylic sheet as compared to frag plugs. A nice clean slice with a sharp razor through the mat. Put all the zoas and the "colonies" in iodine dip before gluing the little ones to small 1"2 acrylic sheets.

The first two pics are the "colonies" and the third are the new frags. The red ones are doing fine. The blue ones didn't do very well though... 1 melted and the other is not opening. Still WIP in terms of reducing or eliminating casualty rates.

My clowns took a liking to my new zoas, and decided to make it their cosy bed at night. Caught them in their sleep when I went back tonight to drop off some stuff. Photo taken with flash. Took a pic of the hermit... been awhile since I saw it in the open.
