Oh... cannot compare like that, the picture above is the photographer, not the lens' fault. Even if I step down to f3.5 and shoot, it will still be much sharper than zoom lens at the same aperture, not to mention the beautiful bokeh. The wide aperture is good for low light situations and abstract photography. I shot the following at f1.4, fully open with a cheap 2nd hand d70:

I might be biased lah, but I really love prime lenses, I sold off my $2.5k zoom and I'm using the $400 50mm as my primary lens now. All the techies and posers I meet will turn their nose at my cheap lens, but I don't care hahaha.

Looks like u must follow me go shopping... Cos by then i really cannot make my mind up...

Yeah i have an EOS 40D but most of the time, using it as a P&S. Time not enough to play with the settings.

Faster go to other mode and play with your DSLR.

This is digital so never mind the result good or bad.No film waste.

but nikon 85mm 1.4 is a good lens too..

Something new to try.

But still too early to tell.

On the 100 mm side still ok.

Have to try on the 200,300 and 400 mm side

Its totally a different way of taking picture

Used to have a P&S but the response is not fast enough to capture my baby's photo.

Took hundreds of photos indoor but 80% turn out blurred.

Did not want the flash to keep hurting my baby's eye too.

So thats the key reason why I got a DSLR.

Now my 2nd baby has lesser shots but 90% of them turns out well (by my standard hor)

But yeah now that I have the camera, will try to play with it - time permitting.

Unfortunately I have more limited time now cause I got new pets for my girl. a pair of hamsters ....hehe

indeed, taking photos of children is very rewarding, but you do need a fast lens, preferably a prime to match up with their speed.

a 50mm, will set you back at most 140bucks, but will be really very worthy. image quality will be higher then your kits lens by alot.

Very good lens. Keep it.

i have a 70 -200 f2.8 is with me now, its a good lens but i dont like to use it as it attract too much attention might let go of it soon, pm me if interested.

yes, zoom are not too bad, but image quality cant fight with prime at all, i used to have a 35, 85, 135 combination for my cam, then sold it for zoom namely 24-70, 70-200 and now im going back to prime again for the image quality.

So very much lighter.

that is not very true though, for i usually will mount my 35mm as a walkaround and a 135 for close up. that 2 lens added together is just abit heavier then the 24-70.
