fine sand - its safe for softbelly fishes. safe for sand wrasse and some goby.

but bad things about fine sand, will cause sandstorm easily as compared to their larger counter part.

dun go for DSB, if u want something natural, take about 2" sand. it will be good enough.

If a man could beat his own fantasy. Then to only breed in captivity. Then its pointless.

Genesis 1:20

And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that has life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. And God created great whales, and every living creature that moves, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

sandbed is nice when clean, nightmare when overgrown with algae... haha

So it's a tradeoff, less headache going bare bottom, look nicer but have to maintain going with sand bed

And I would go for shallow sand bed for decorative purposes rather than dsb. Can always create a refugium if you want dsb.

Ah I see.. thanks all for your contributions :D

What maintenance is there with concern to let's say a 2" for decorative purposes?

Like algae and what kind of other stuff?

Mostly the different types of algae. hair, red slime, diatoms to name a few. Actually this is prob related to new tank syndrome and will die off as your tank matures, but sometimes might get an outbreak when parameters are off.
