Are you still using aged old metal halide to boil your aquarium tank 8 hours every day?

Adding more heat into tank to stress your corals?

Making your chiller working restlessly and doubly hard to pull out the heat from your tank?

Exchanging the heat from the water to circulating hot air around your family in the most relaxing living room?

Do you find it entertaining enjoying your lovely mini reef world at your home at the same time with Singapore’s tropical warm temperature?

Are you still paying high electricity bill generated by unwanted heat?

Here come the LED age to rescue aquarists, by getting rid of hot metal halide and traditional hot bulb and lighting tubes.

Traditional Light cons: Generate unwanted high heat, fragile, emit UV, short lifespan, intensity degrade relatively fast, 360 degree view angle mostly not hitting on target, therefore reflector is needed; reflector adds up to your costs, occupy space , loss of light intensity caused by non ideal reflect rate and cannot be instantaneous on/off, etc.

LEDs are effective, energy-saving, reliable, low heat generating solid state lighting device, giving shimmering effect, provide excellent results and lower operating costs for aquarium. LED array have more lighting points, thus it gives constant intensity across tank much better than a 2-spotlight like metal halide.

I’m letting go below LED light, because I’m currently using another one similar.

Below are the specifications and pictures for illustrations:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Weight: 7kg

Chassis: Grey, Aluminum

Mounting: “C†Hook for hanging

Condition: Brand New

Qty for sale: One (Sorry, only one piece left for this model, act fast!)

Price: S$1,200 (Very good deal in terms of dollar/watt = S$7.70/watt; slightly more than retail cost price for DIY)

156w LED – side view: Left – without external cover, the internal look, good quality heat sink and fan ventilation to ensure many years to come. Right –with cover

ledlmpfrontlighton.jpg w600.png156w LED – light on with closer look but away from view angle. The light beams are focused without using reflector and eliminate wastage of out-of-target light. The plain glass (non acrylic) panel not only eases maintenance, it also ensures transparency for a long time, to deliver maximum light output.

156 watt is spreadover 4 ft right?

Hi Sherman bro,

My light is 1 meter or about 39.5 inches but my tank is 4ft (48 inches).

But normally we keep a distance from water level and LEDs have beam angle, so it will be covered all place at certain height. Not too high else will lower the brightness.

Check the last photo which shows the light on above the tank.

Let’s do some maths.

Tank length: 48â€

Light Length: 39.5â€

The furthest distance for both ends LED (est.): 38â€

So the distance from one end of tank to one end of light is (48 – 38) /2 = 5â€.

Beam angle: 90 degree.

Apply right-angled triangle rule, the height between water level to light = 5 x tan (90/2) = 5â€.

This is the height for lamp that will cover your entire tank water level from left to right.

You can do same calculation for finding the height for cover your width of tank.

Hope it helps.

However, usually the aquarium aquascape design will not have corals at the far end of each side. Don’t worry if the light can’t cover the 100% of the water at the top.The light coverage area will expand as it goes deeper, provided the light intensity is sufficient. So don’t place the lamp too high as it lose intensity. Also, there should be some safety height to minimize water splashing on it and water vapor should also be taken note.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Bro,

You are right in some area.

But the light intensity falls greatly as the distance from the LED increase.Same for all type of lighting.

Worse still your light will also be bent from its initial path due to the difference in

the air and water density.

So you actually need lens to bring the light spread to a narrower beam to get the require intensity and PAR

as your tank go deeper.

The light spread might be there but the intensity and PAR may not be there.

Bros, u guys can seriously consider tag-team n design an ultimate LED light set.. The points above from both parties when combine together into a set should create the ultimate design that increase efficiency due to optimum use n placing of LEDs and reduce cost.. :eyebrow::eyebrow:

Main Tank: 5 x 1 x 1

Return from overflow: Eheim compact+ 5000

Lighting: 2x 54W T5

Skimmer: Deltec SC 1350

Chiller: Arctica 1/10

Wave Maker: Tunze Nano Wavebox & Tunze 6055 with Photocell
Monitor 1: American Marine Pinpoint pH monitor

Yes, I fully agree that your above first point. Light intensity will greatly reduce as distance from LED increase, and etc.

The wider the beam angle, the worse the light intensity as distance increases.

According to some studies, a plain glass will contribute a loss of 5% light intensity, so adding an external object (such as lens), will only make it worst. I guess lens is just for people who don't have a choice to buy the LED according to the desired beam angle they want. Manufacturers have ways to customize beam angle for LED in order to do without the lens, and also save on product and process costs.

Frankly, I am quite lazy to do such technical stuff although it's good to learn many things from sherman and from others in DIY team. Thanks.

Have not seen any manufacturers produces LEDs to meet the difference requirements so far.(Beam angle)

In fact choice of beam angle is very limited.

Most major LEDs manufacturers like Cree, Luxeon, SSC ,Osram, etc produce a range of lens for different

application for their own LEDs.

Most of these lens is easily available on most online store.

Maybe LENS for LED is like Filter for camera LENS

This new LED light will make you smile <_< when your next electrical bill come! Continuing to use your existing conventional lighting will raise your expenses by 12.5% in Q4.

Most of the LEDs users experience that.

In fact this is one project the Singapore Government is funding

Thanks for the recommendation. What's the price and weight?

Ok, found the price at http://www.tmc-ltd.co.uk/latest-news.asp.

It looks impressive, but one unit is 10x3w = 30w for GroBeam 1000 ND range from £189.99 to £264.99 (with AquaRay Control).

That's SGD428 (w/o controller) for 30w. Am I right?

So dollar/watt = S$14.20/watt

To get near to 150w, then need to buy 5 units or $2140 (does not include the frame and freight charge)

If the weight is not too heavy and total size is not a problem, probably your tank can take 5 units at one time.

I like the 5-year warranty and no fan design.

If you think it fit your need, go ahead to get one. :-)

I like the 5-year warranty and no fan design.

All LEDs have life for 70,000 to 100,000 hrs if connected up as manufacturer recomendation.

So I personally think 5 years is nothing.Right?

No manufacturer of high power LED recomend that.

If fact all specify and highlight that you have to ensure good, sufficient and appropiate heat dissipation

if you want your LED life to be close to the manufacturer claim.

So how to run LED without fan?

I agree 100% with u.

Inappropriate heat dissipation design will never be able to reach the LED longest lifespan. This is crucial but most people optimistic think that all LED lighting can have longer life than conventional light. Also, the design engineer will not push the current requirement to max, as lifespan will be shorter. This is not different from driving a car, the engine can’t last long at constant max speed.

No Fan. Who know? They probably have new break thru in technology. But I am rather worried about the heat problem. The main advantage for a no fan design may be for water resistance purpose.

Probably they do the heat dissipation test based on UK weather, so there is no problem. But for us staying in a tropical country, with all year average temp of 30 degrees C, there might be problems without fan. Btw, is it worth to send overseas for service?
