Ah xenias!! my favourite softies. can literally go dizzy watching them pulse haha! they grow super fast too. have a huge mountain of them. can watch them pulse like mad and destress hehe.

btw, can feed supersuns and suns with mysis too. squirt into their mouth, more than sufficient. easy to feed also. and no fear of them spitting back out...

Those listed are the ones I want to keep.

The small tang - might let go in future.... need to combat the algae.

the mandarin in JM not nice.

I am looking for smaller ones and not so dull coloured ones.

there are some species with really bright colours.

What other corals are bright yellow / orange in colour?

there are some naturally occruing leather corals that are yellow. these are from fiji i think. rare, but...leathers... haha. don't find them nice.

most yellow/orange corals are azooxanthellae and require heavy feedings. like seafans, suns and sponges.

there are some orange zoas, blastos, yumas. yellow and orange are quite unusual for corals huh. haha

interesting note about xenia:

enia (Xenia elongate and Xenia sp.)

Xenia is a very attractive coral that literally can turn from one stalk to five or ten in a matter of a few weeks/a month or two. Some xenia’s polyps can open and close in a pulsing mode and it really gives this coral and your tank a unique look. Placement for this coral is key, since they grow at such a rapid pace you must provide room for them to grow. An xenia will easily over grow other neighboring corals. This is by far the easiest soft coral to frag simply because they grow so rapidly it will not take more than a week or two for the coral to attach to a frag plug or live rock rubble, usually a line of fishing wire wrapped around the frag holding it against whatever you choose to attach it to will be good enough and the coral will attach. One of the only problem with this coral is they are known to have a die out period where one day the colony of xenia is thriving and the next they are shriveled and dead, Some people think this is caused by the tanks water being to hot others think it is because the xenia has used up all they could from the water, But in any case some xenia die for no apparent reason.

xenia is a very unique coral. pulsing activity is increased with stable Ph and iodine. although there is no 100% confirm case, this has been the anecdotal evidence shared by reefers around the world. xenia appreciate high flow or low flow. do take note that the lower the flow, the more the pulsing therefore, current pulsing theory number 2 came about. xenia pulse to increase flow movement. that;s why in higher flow, they cease pulsing activity. but all these theories towards pulsing action are still only hearsay, and has not been proven scientifically.

take care of them and they will spread like wild flower, till they become like this :) they do sometimes melt for no reason though

Sigh... that my PH just hit 8.4 just now.

So now it is swinging from 7.95 - 8.4 !!!!!!

@$#^#&*(^%$@

yours looks very very glamorous.... if I can use that to describe a coral. :)

One more thing, I changed 10% water and the PH dropped from 8.3 to 7.98 !!!!

Maybe thats why the goby cannot take it.

Maybe next time just change 5%.

ORP has also dropped from 370 to 330 :(

Bro,

Did you check your salinity before you change your water? and with what salt did you mix for this water change?

Hope I can nail the problem for you (:

Marc J.

haha. whole tank is xenia. every corner also have. my favourite softy.

btw, good Ph is around 8. xenia like that. but since there is no scientific proof, don't worry lah lol. they look just as nice, not pulsing. they can, stop pulsing for nothing too. even with stable Ph.

Happy Reefing,

Marc J.

I bought the salt mixed water from ML.

Did not test salinity & other parameters.

yesterday, there was a mini commotion at home. (wife was running very high fever)

and I ended up changing water only at 1 am.... really could not be bothered with too much at that time.

Mandarin better don't buy so fast unless it's feeding. New tank not enough pods for it to survive.

I bought liquid copepods already.

how to use that ? so can take care of mandarins already ?

Mandarins feed on copepods so just pour it into the tank and the mandarins will search for them to makan. You can train the mandarins to feed on pallets but takes a very long time and may not be successful.
