Why would I want a moonlight?

I personally have got 2x4 blue led moonlight to recreate lunar lighting. Don't know if it works for the tank inhabitants, but it serves as a night light for my family. hahaa

Is there any scientific proof on the advantages of moonlight effect?

I do not know if what I am doing is right. I normally switch on all lights (3PL, 1 super-white, 1 pinkish, and 1 blue). I assume that the 3 will give a "balanced" lighting effect.

The best indication is that your corals respond well to the lights So I assume you don't use moonlight as well bro...

its good to have moonlight for natural stimulation. if one is taking into serious consideration of mimicking the nature, you should also look at profilux's Dimmable LED light stick.

you can control the moon phase with the location you desired. just input the coordinates and you are good to go.

the light stick have 4 colors of LED, namely blue, white, orange and red.

it can also create sun raise, sun set and lightning storm flashes in your tank which in turn set ur controlled wavemaker go crazy to create a storm effect to wash off debris.

i hope i can set up the unit probably by next week and make a video of it after i get my video capable DSLR.

Moonlight was thought to be a important signal for coral spawning. Do you REALLY want your corals to spawn in your tank? A major spawning would probably crash your tank.

Besides moon phase and cycles, tide, water condition, temperature, weather also play their parts in this cycle. Moonlight is only part of the whole deal.

If you want your moonlight to mimic nature, you'll need to have a device to adjust the moonlight according to moon phases, not just daily shining and dimming. Different intensities according to moon phase, random dimming to simulate cloud cover, etc... Even with this it'll never be as-is-nature.

So think again....

I think the idea is to create as real a natural habitat as possible. I suppose if one had the money, one would get a computer to mimc cloud movements, tidal movements, sunrise, sunset etc.

But if I was on a budget and cannot afford profilux, dimming features and the whole high tech package, I would still try my best to get a good enough wavemaker, auto timer for lights n the like. So the big question, taking into consideration this mindset: does simply shining blue leds onto my reef at night help in anyway?

Assuming there is no benefit to the tank inhabitants, and there are also no harms, my view is that it lets me enjoy my tank longer after light hours. Like bro Dachkie. I've been searching online for scientific proof of benefit/harm for stimulating moonlight in the tank, but doesn't seem to be a phenomenon widely accepted.

while it is true that coral spawning might crash a tank but still i would like to achieve that kind optimal condition for them to behave as they would in the sea. and profilux controller is able to forfill the moon phase, cloud cover, temperature, current etc. but it is also true that all these will never be as-is-nature. i read an article before that spawning etc might not be related to moonphases etc, but can be of gravity pull of the moon. still, much need to be studied before we can ever come to a conclusion. but still i would love my fishes to enjoy those benefit.

and its really depends on one's belief to see if its worth the investment as these devices can cost a bomb.

I agree. At the end of the day, we are trying to recreate the natural habitat as close as possible. However, whether that involves moonlight still remains to be seen. If there is no harm to it, I'm more inclined to why not?
