I understand what you mean. I just got a 1.5 cube nano tank and home minister already complaining that it is too bulky... geez.

No no on the IQ3 especially if you are new to the hobby. Try to go for 2 feet at least.

But if you do not have a choice. then you do not have a choice. You can only keep very very limited invertebrates in that tank. Not even sure if it is a good thing to keep a small fish in there. Suggest maybe you can set it up as a zoos garden. DO a good job and perhaps they will let you upgrade on seeing the beauty of the marine aquaria. Good Luck!

IQ3 is really too small to keep a reef tank. I don't think you will be happy just seeing 1 small zoa frag in it right?

Can check out the nano tanks forum on how some of the reefers maintain their nano tanks. The smaller the tank, the more meticulous you have to be in maintaining the tank, or things can quickly deteriorate, and lead to loss of fishes/corals.

Especially since you might face resistance in keeping a marine tank, I suggest to do a lot more research before deciding whether to take the plunge. It is an expensive hobby which takes up time, and lots of effort, and might even lead to more tension especially when things go wrong (which is more likely to happen the smaller the tank). Very sad to see ppl giving up because they didn't anticipate the problems initially or didn't do enough research and tank crash.

However the rewards are definitely plentiful! For eg. staring at my tank the other night soothed away my headache from work!

right right....

thanks for the comments and advises....

looks like I need to decomm a 2ft to start this.... :)

but another question, can I actually run a marine on a cannister filter?

of course u can run marine on cannister, my tank is currently setup with an eheim pro3. However there are times when i wish I had gotten a sump instead. Lots of benefits in running a sump, especially for small tanks, coz it helps to increase the total gallonage. If you are getting 2ft n below tank, i would recommend sump to increase water volume.

decomm 2ft? Just a wild guess here, are u currently running a FW tank? Do take note that FW tanks usually have glass thickness of 6mm. Too thin to support SW+sand+LR. I would go with 10mm min. I think the standard is 8mm.

yes

its a FW tank.... 6mm...

hmmmmm

so i cant even use it......

2ft tank is relatively cheap. If you are considering sump, someone in pasar malam selling brand new 2.5ft tank here:

yupz 6mm asking for trouble... glass crack, water all over living room, endless mopping... traumatic!

Linus,

In marine fish and reef tanks, the smaller the tank the more difficult to maintain and be successful.

Hi I set up my IQ3 a month ago in my office u can go to Nano section and find under mini IQ3 for reference. I have now a clown and a cleaner shrimp in it. Point to note dont over feed and change water weekly then it should be ok. My colleague all want me to set up for them. Now i have 3 in my office with different fishes. Btw i did some mod on my filter system nothing much just add bio-ball. Hope thats help if you are still keen in setting up the IQ3. Cheers
