hi all, i think of using a Rio 32hf pump (7500 lph) to drive a 24" beckett skimmer, teco RA680 chiller, and also return. 3-way, is it advisable?

Project R.E.

Main Tank: 48" x 18" x 24" 12mm with external overflow piping

Sump Tank: 28" x 14.5" x 12" (3 compartments)

Lightings: T5 HO - Hopar 3* 39w + ATI 2* 54w

Skimmer: Skimz Bullet Beckett

Chiller: Resun CL-650 (28 - 29 °C)

Wavemakers: 2* Seio M620 + 1* Hydor K2 (7100 litre / hr)

Fluidized Reactor: Skimz FR (currently empty)

Pumps: 1x Rio 32HF (Skimmer), 1x Rio 20HF (Return & Chiller)

Filtration: more than 80kg LRs, chaeto

Water Circulation: ~ 4000 litre / hr

Future Plans: additional wavemaker, DIY algae scrubber, DIY overflow box

Previously:

Project R : 36" x 12" x 24" 10mm reef

Not advisable for 3 ways especially a beckett skimmer need a powerful pump to obtain it best performance. If your pump failed, you will have nightmare.

Not possible, if you split the pump into 3, I dont think your beckett skimmer will work.Even if it works, definitely not enough bubbles.

Previously. I use 1 rio pump to drive skimmer only. In my opinon, I dont think the rio32 pump has 7500Lph as you will need to factor in head losses due to piping, height factor etc..and I think its overated by the manufacturer. If you really want to split into 3, suggest to use pressure rated pump e.g. MD55 /MD70

Bro,

What is your actual concern as I think you are insisting of using 1 pump to Tee off?

Electricity consumption? Cost to buy more pumps?

My proposal. HF 20 for skimmer assuming your skimmer is not tall and place on ground.

Then a smaller pump for return + Tee off to chiller. So the total consumption of both pumps equals that of 1 Rio HF32.

However , this is my opinon.. You can try to tee off with 1 pump and let me know if it works.

  • 1 month later...

Sorry if this was asked before but Google showed nothing .... I need diagrams

I'm currently running 2 pumps in my sump (no chiller yet - that's another pump eventually)- one for the protein skimmer to work and one return pump. Is it possible to use just 1 x large capacity pump for both or all ? I think the heat load is way too high

Is it advisable ?

What other items would I need to make this happen ?

Other thoughts include running the pumps externally instead of insump but the only way I know would be to use a external cannister filter. Any comments ?
