Which skimmer?

I am looking to buy a new skimmer and have narrowed it down to 2 models of reef octopus. The DNW 110 and the BH 100 (i know these are very old models, going to be phased out, but these are the most cost-effective skimmers i can afford). My three main factors are: Price, Performance and Noise (noise as my tank is right next to my bed and i don't want my sleep to be affected by it)

According to the fish shop:

- the DNW is around 100 bucks more expensive than the BH 100 (i save a portion of my $50 a week allowance to fund my marine tank, so 100 bucks means a lot to me)

- the DNW is a little noiser than the BH 100, but a little noise makes a lot of difference to a good night's sleep, right?)

- the DNW is around 50% more efficient than the BH 100

My tank consists of mainly softies, one LPS and a clam and a few fish, although i cam considering an SPS or two in the future...i am also planning to put cheato in my tank. and FYI, my tank is now running fine on a boyu skimer (the smallest model), but upgrades to the skimmer are in order.

What are your views? I am pretty set on the BH 100, but is there anyone who can change my mind? Is the DNW 110 really quiet, so much so that the difference is not significant? and are there any bad reviews on the BH 100? hahaha. thanks for your inputs in advance.

I'm running a Reef Octopus DNW200.

It's a little noisy when the water level in the tank gets low beyond optimum skimming (I do wet skimming).

Performance wise, I say I cannot believe Reef Octopus skimmers can skim shit out of my ULN system. So well, good choice for setting your sights on an economical and efficient skimmer :D

If you want to see the performance, by all means arrange a time with me, I will be more than glad to entertain you (:

Happy Reefing,

Marc J.

any takers?

I believe that what u pay will be what u get... And an advice from a book written by Michael S. Paletta don't skimp on a good skimmer buy a better one and u will not regret it... But in the end its still up to u... ;) Of course get the best of what u can afford...

1ft cube with IOS [the low tech tank]

1. JBJ C-breeze to keep temp hovering around 27-28'C

2. LED clip on - 120 bulbs

-skimmer-less-

My 3 humble equipments that keeps my tank running... [DRIED OUT]

1. The RSM itself of course 2.My NEW Deltec MCE-300 Skimmer 3. My trusty Arctica Chiller

Tank parameters:

Temperature maintained at 25.3'C to 24.7'C

No3: 10ppm(b4 the use of the deltec skimmer)

No3: 5ppm (after use of the skimmer)

Others? too lazy to measure...LOL

ok. i will take everything into consideration. thanks for your advice. unfortunately, i am not a rich guy and furthurmore, as my tank is in my room, I don't think i would want to get an overpowered skimmer....i know the skimmer is the heart of my reef tank, but my sleep is what keeps me going everyday. I got a noisy aquaroum fan once. 2 weeks of hell before i decided i had enough and hopped down to sim lim to get some 12V computer fans. They were much quieter and the first night with them was bliss. Another option is of course to run the skimmer on a timer, but that i feel cuts the efficiency of the skimmer as it has less time to skim...one quiet, reasonable good skimmer running full time beat a better skimmer runing halftime.

how abt skimz 150 or bubble magus? i think iwarna or lck carries bubble magus...china brand but quite effective n cheap also.

think skimz 150 ($600+) out of his budget

didn't see bubble magus when i was at the iwarna.

think Reef octopus is a better bet as it has been around for 4-5 years. The new range looks really good to0

think noise is hard to determind if its noisy or not. Maybe you can take a look at the running model to know the noise level.

the model you are looking at is only a 1000l/hr pump so you have to look at a similiar size skimmer.

Dnw-200 is a 3000l/hr pump, more power naturally more noise.

anwyay i am imagining that your room is small and quiet. do take note of your tanks overflow, it can be quite loud if not taken care of.

a good skimmer is indeed extremely important....however from my experience an ex skimmer doesn't mean its good.

I have seen a china 200+ skimmer out skim a 800+ aqua medic.

think it's because the cost that goes into the skimmer doesn't necessarily contribute to the performance of the skimmer.

but of course a cheap skimmer can't have quality materials being used.

Yep... i absolutely agree like red sea brand not china brand but i'm unhappy abt its performance... so its advised to ask ard before purchasing one... :eyebrow:

try going for the bubble magus. at least it uses aquabee pump....very very quiet too. for my tank, cup is full after 4days. very dark kopi o. after washing the cup, on the skimmer, within 1 min start foaming liao. very value for money i feel

im using bubble king supermarin 300. despite it using a relatively powerful pump sucking air, it is extremely quiet which is an important factor for it being in ur room.

do consider for the smaller models suiting ur need.

happy reefing :)

Ok. I got a octopus skimmer. (DNW, DDNW or DNWB? i forgot the model) 110 skimmer (external). 'Second hand' from reborn. Waiting for it to kick in. It was not as quiet as i wanted it to be, but i will see what i can do about it. All these external skimmers can be 'placed in water' right? mabye i will get a small acrylic tank with freshwater and dump the skimmer into it. That will take care of almost any noise, not to mention any small leaks.

Bro, I will not do that if I were you. I put my DNW200 insump and have to deal with a specific water level inside the tank to churn out the right kind of skimmate I want. Water level in tank will achieve a balanced water level inside the skimmer. It's the physics of fluids. So yah, if gonna put outsump, you can try putting a small tray/base plate to act as water collection for leakages or make use of the fish tank just don't put water in it. Okay?
