Otopus diet???

Hi all bros and sis, just bought an octopus from Pasir Ris LFS, A few question to ask the pros in this forum, for those who kept octo b4.

1) what do they eat??

2) izzit ok to keep more then 1 octo in a tank?? (Mine's a nano tank)

Hmmm... Bro, sometimes it is better to do some research before you commit in buying any fishes and coral.. For your case, Octopus...

Okay, now to your questions...

1) what do they eat??

Ans: Basically you can feed market prawn, and live fishes.. You can try cutting the market prawn to bite size and try to feed to them.. Using tongs or pincer and target feed them.. Alternatively you can get drop the prawn near them and hope they eat...

Ans: Not an expert with octopus, but from my knowledge, you cannot keep more than 2 octopus in a tank..

Please don't buy LS on impulse. They are living creatures. You'll most likely not be able to keep anything else in your nano now. Do note that they are great escape artists so cover your tank tightly.

Since the LS is already in your tank, Do plenty of reading:

Oh ya, Like what Iskay said.. They are great escape artist.. And it require a species tank.. Meaning you can add nothing much into your tank.. Smaller fishes will become food and bigger fish will become predator for your octopus.. But their lifespan is very short, average is 3-6 months..

Tonmo is a great site with good info on octopus. Iskay and Terryz are right, you need to do lots of research now before you end up with a semi-dried, smelly mess stuck to your floor!

Do note that octopus usually have a life of less than 2 years when they reaches our shops, thus they are not popular with aquarists in this part of the world.

hmm im guessing the octopus you bought would probably be the common pygmy octopus , goes for around 8 - 10 dollars a piece. I've kept a few before cause i like cephlapods, best food for them like what some of our reefers mentioned is actually target , or if you got a budget better still, you can buy some nuisance crabs from fellow reefers to feed your octopus , im very sure some of them would donate them to you :) but yeah , feeding live food takes effort cause its gonna cost you a bomb , on travelling and keeping the food alive.

Cephs in short prey mainly on crustaceans and mollusks so yeah you shouldnt go wrong with the feeding part cause our super market is flooded with ready made cut prawns which you can feed your octo.

Another pointer is that they need full strength sea water , so any less that 1.024- 1.025 in my experience shortens their lifespan by quite alot. and last point , never add copper into the tank , copper = good game , can throw away your octopus life and your tank if you ever wanna keep octopus's again.

The main benefit of having octo is that, it will clear yr tank free of crabs and other small creatures that hitch hiked on yr live rocks.
