Balling method Vs Calcium Reactor

Hi all, have been pondering to go for Balling method or stay with my initial plan for Calcium Reactor..

For me, it will be a mainly zoas, mush, yumas and softies tank.. With some assort monti cap and digi..

With the recent hike in electricity prices, I am turning to a cost efficient method, which is balling method, I am able to get variable dosing pump at a good price and they run at a lower wattage too..

So just wish to get some feedback about the balling method Vs calcium reactor..

Thanks..

I am more game for balling because of the cost-saving it has provided on the long run. And less equipments also mean lesser applications of Murphy's Theory.

Hope you know what I mean bro.

Anyway do you have the formula for the dosing regime? (:

Also, if you ask me if with your current stock level, do you need to do dosing. My answer is no need. You can always replace the necessary elements with weekly water changes. Oceanic, D&D and Reef Crystal salt mixes are really good!

Here's something for the ref:

Lastly, where are you going to get your variable dosing pump from? Let me know via PM k! (:

As you know, I am still quite green towards Balling... I normally will take a look at the dosing product then do my calculation from there, depending on my tank intake daily...

I am afraid I might go all out sps once I get some success from Monti..

So the calcium and carbonate intake might be faster than usual...

Will PM you the dosing pump website.. Have not used it yet but worth a try...

still prefer a CR to take care of things when iz properly tune up...

balling is abit more troublesome in the sense that u haf to mix the minerals into bottles..

just my 2cents..

It's okay bro. Everything is a learning step to something greater! (:

well for myself, I use the Reef Calculator to calculate how much I need to dose per week, then I adjust from there. So, keeping a journal of your daily regime is necessary for balling if not, die liao (:

Anyway, there's no harm going for CR or kalk reactor. For myself even though I am using Balling, I am still planning to run a kalk reactor to provide the necessary stability for the tank just in case, something fails at least the consequences aren't that detrimental. But sticking with my principles, that's gonna be the last equipment going in service for my tank's backbone (:

Nonetheless bro before you consider if you want to do balling or run a CR, you got to run in the necessary cost to maintain the necessary equipments or the cost to buy the necessary stuff to start the regime. Balling alike CR has a lot of hidden costs. Test kits alone will cost you a blue note already (:

So think hard before making the plunge (:

Marc

With a CR, you sure have created a really nice tank! Keep it up Chris :D

True, But I feel the running cost is a bit high as the pump will be running almost 24/7... But different reefer got different reefing method so will not comment much..

:)

There are liquid element additives that can be bought straight from LFS...

Ya... But I think the calculation and monitoring is very vital.. I think I will be using Balling alone... Should be able to sustain a normal mixed reef...

Ya, there are always different cost to running different method... But electricity bill is more expensive and it a monthly payment compared to the test kits and additives which can be used for 3 to 6 months..

Bro,

What salt-mix will you be using, FMLK balling needs salt-mix low in sodium chloride (NaCl).

There are some trying out Balling-light, you considering that as well?

Yup, Read about FM balling light method, if I never remember wrongly, they suggested TM pro special mineral.. But I wanna search for a more afforadable source... TM salt a bit on the high side for me.. Maybe will try Oceanic but will go read the content first..

I most likely will be doing balling light... Still figuring out what is the difference between balling light and normal balling..

I think found out the difference liao... Hehe.. The addition of trace elements and amino acids to the dosing is absence in Balling Light?

I think will be following the traditional balling, with 4 containers, Ca, ALK, MG and trace elements.

Hope I am not getting anything wrong here..

Anyone have sources to chemical salts in SG? Or should I buy the products off LFS shelf?

The Balling Light includes trace elements, but skips many of the more complicated Amino Acid and NaCl free salt additions that are used in the Balling Complete Method. Instead it relies on the above Ca, Alk, and Mg ingredients and weekly 10% water changes. The weekly 10% water changes are to address a possible build up of NaCl. Thus if you intend to use normal salt-mix, Balling light is the way to go.
