Some help needed..

Need some help here..

I have a 2 x 1 x1 frag tank connected to my 4 x 3 x 2 main tank. i.e. water from main tank will flow into the frag tank and then out into the common sump.

Problem is my frag tank is facing some cynobacteria.. while my main tank is running good and perfectly clear from it.. So it shouldn't be due to the quality of water.I dont have much LS in my frag tank too.. 4 fishes in it..

Is it due to too much light?? currently running on 4 x 24 watts T5 Or

Too little flow ? Currently with a Hydor 2 wavemaker and flow from inlet pipe.. Or..

All algae is diverted and grow in my frag tank just like the principle of an algae scrubber??

Any idea to solve the problem? :thanks:

Hi David,

A few of my friend and I struggled with this problem recently and finally manages to solve the problem by switching salt brand. We believe the salt we used earlier may have some trace that causes the bloom. You may want to see whether changing salt works for you.

I'll gladly dose MB7 or BioDigest to counter this problem/sudden outbreak of cyano.

Likewise, I agree with what bro. Gouldian says. Do a switch of the brand of the salt you are using and see how it turns out (:

Hi, I am also having the same problem of red algae like cyno like problem.

It has been spreading slowly despite the things i have done:

- added in rowaphos

- reduce feeding by more than 80%

- weekly change of water using oceanic salt (3 buckets)

- replace the DI resins for my water filter

When i was using coralife, i faced low ca/dkh/mg and bad solubility, no no alage problem. Changed to oceanic, solved the water parameters problem, but has increasing algae problem. I could not point the salt mix as the problem.

Will test out the following soon and see if it helps:

- addition of volka

- change of salt to d&d after depleting the oceanic

- change of lights at the end of the year

Lastly, try out the ultraslime product.

if u having cyano problems you will want to avoid vodka as that might contribute to more problems,

try manually suck out the red slime until its all gone and putting in a wavemaker in your frag tank for increase water movement

I am currently using coral life salt.. Hopefully this is not the one that you have stopped using.. But the strange thing is that my main tank has no signs of cyno... so I doubt it was the water quality.. though i did not check on my water for quite a while.. lazy lazy.. But I am finishing the same tub of salt soon.. will be changing brand.

Hi David,

No, that's not the one I have stopped using.

Anyway, I have another friend who have several tank hooked up in one system sharing the same parameters, lighting, flow etc. And to our surprise, one of the tank developed cyano where as the rest don't. It seems that we don't have the answers to everything.
