Just had an awesome display of my FW vs. Royal Gamma

Camped in front of my tank for 30min to get this couple of shots. Feel the urge to upgrade my kit lens to a tammy 90mm soon!

Just a rough commentary on what happened. FW was trying to come out of cave. Royal Gamma decided to scare him off with tt lazy yawn of his. Real meanie! In response, FW comes out of cave decked in his resplendent colours, royal gamma bui song, scare him one more time. Watch the reaction of FW! Really interesting display of aggressive behaviour by both fishes.

I love my FW colours!

not too sure what brand you are in, although most macro shooter will tell you to use manual focus when shooting close up but for fishes, they are too fast for manual focus, and the tammy 90 is really slow and inaccurate when focusing.

hmmm i was thinking tammy 90 more for corals close up actually, but if it has really slow focusing, then it's quite useless for fishes rite? what lens do you use for your fishes? like the one on your royal gamma? I don't think i will have budget for Nikon lens, any other recommendations?

im using canon 100mm f2.8 macro for my fishes, its slow but at least still doable, if i was to use tammy, it would be too slow.

if you are using for coral close up, tammy would be a worthy investment.

105mm too slow cannot shoot fish I dunno about the AFS version though, that one is definitely out of my budget.

And many a time need a flash to freeze the object.

Maybe a zoom lens with converter can do the job better.

Anyone tried shooting with 50mm prime <f 2.8 at ISO 100 and crop? Will photo quality be comparable and will DOF be enough?

Very good lens.

Can take very good foto.

But to crop and get a good foto you need good lens, good light,

good camera man.

Not easy.

I prefer something from 70 to 200 where there is a lot of ground

to play.

Sometime too close very hard to take what we want.

You might wanna consider using egg crates though. Rigid and easy to lift for maintainence. I find that the netting will scroll and bunch together, always touch the water and won't stay still.

Oh I shot most of my tank photos recently with my 50mm 1.4, then crop the pics after. My camera is 12.6mp, so even if I crop 20% of the picture, it will be more than enough for posting on the web. I don't archive my tank pics, nor do I need to print wall sized banners, so I don't really care about cropping and resizing.

will egg crate blockout quite a good percentage of the light? maybe a combo of eggcrate (for frame) and net.

think there are some translucent net.

Alternatively, can leave a gap where the light fixture is. There is an arowana tank in my office and we have to put egg crates with weight to prevent it from jumping. As for light, it looks properly illuminated, but I don't have the means to measure or compare la.

I'm quite reluctant to use egg crates due to the reflection of light. And have to take into account salt spray from tank, it gets really messy and hard to clean. I tried using them when cycling my tank, gave up on them eventually...

options:

1) Not sure what you feed your fish with.

you can have a small opening for feeding.

I think the chance is slim for you fish to jump out through this opening. If you are worried you can cover it up easily.

2) Your cover panel need not be 1 big piece. can be multiple pieces. just stack 1 piece on top of another to get an opening.

Note: you will still have salt sprays on the cover panel. so more husbandry needed. and gotta be careful with cleaning the panel cause if you scratch it badly over time, you will have issues permitting light in. Also I think you will need to cut some opening on the cover panel - amybe a few long thin opening so that heat can dissipate through it else water might condense on the underneath = more salt on cover panel.

Explore if you can create a frame using thick acrylic and then use net as the inbetween. either use some glue or cable tie to secure them?

Can have 2 - 3 of these frames to cover your 3 ft.

Cannot be better than Nikon's 60 year old flagship prime lens right? I think the lens is damn solid with good colours on its own already, so I'm quite skeptical that a 3rd party lens will perform better.

heh coz D60 has no internal focusing motor, I will need an AFS lens. I agree nothing beats the AFD, but due to my limited choices, the Sigma is a solid performer in this range
