Think only suitable for small tanks. So better double chk

Main Tank : 48 inch by 36 inch by 28 inch (2 sides starphire glass)
Sump Tank :
Return Pump :
Chiller : Starmax Compressor 1 HP Drop coil
Chiller Return Pump
Protein Skimmer :
Wave Maker :
Fluidised Reactor :

Cooling ROD? First time I ever heard of such a thing but the closest thing I can think of is the Ice Probe... suitable only for smaller tanks and costs something like $300+?

Works on the peltier effect... IMO, not worth the money esp since everyone upgrades to a bigger tank... hehe

not really advisable to get a "drop in" chiller unit (this type of chiller is known in states as the drop-in unit..normal chiller like what we us in S'pore is known as the inline unit)!!

1st of all the efficiency of the chiller is greatly dependent on the location and the condition of the spot you drop in the coil..ie low flow or closed flow area will result in inefficient cooling of the entire water column..In States this type of drop in units are usually 1 grade below the in-line unit in terms of efficiency..ie a 3/4HP in-line unit probably is as powerful or more efficient than the 1HP drop-in unit.

2ndly, the drop in unit has to be located right beside the sump or tank to be cooled..though a normal in-line unit is often seen to be placed right beside the sump, it actually offers the option to be placed remotely, linked via hose or pvc tubes, in some well ventilated location! And from the image, you can see some form of flexi hose being used to channel the refrigerant within the coil...this thingy is extremely leaky due to movable or bendable parts (from readings in RC)..the joints suffer a lot of undue stress which will sometimes result in failure after a period of use.

true to speak..but i think efficiency should be the main issue here..

not only must you clean the inline of dirt..there is the issue of calcium deposit..but heck.. i would waste more $$ by spending more on power consumption of the less efficient unit than regularly cleaning the parts of a more efficient unit!

Perhaps its because you don't need another pump? and hoses running everywhere... maybe good for seafood but not really for tanks..

+ it takes up valuable space in the sump... would be interesting to see if anyone uses this for their tank though...
