Reef tank resource and committment

Recommended Posts

Hi All, I had been keeping an "OK" LPS reef tank in the past for a long time until I reluctantly gave it up due to the arrival of my first child and also due to moving house a few years ago. Lately I felt a calling to start reefing again, even in my dreams. I'm off the reefing scene for a few years now and would like to seek some advise and opinion whether I should indulge in a new reef tank project. My main concern are below:

1) My job involve occasional traveling. Is it possible or practical to keep & maintain a reef tank if I am for example away for 2 months? I can set up automatic feeding but can the water chemistry be maintain well by using gadgets controllers (btw, what's the cost of such systems?)? I am not familiar with such systems and options in these area.

2) My last tank was a continually effort because I learned from scratched, alot of improvisions and very untidy. How can I keep a tank setup neat and clean & SILENT?

3) Btw, if I'm going to start a tank, it's is atleast going to be 4 ft.

pls advise.

thank you. :thanks:

Welcome back to the Reefing community.. ;)

Like some of us here like to say "Once a reefer and always a Reefer"..

As usual, plan ahead what you want to keep before hand before designing your tank system, filteration , equipment and most import of all Budget ! With a good equipment, you shouldnt have problem with noise in your room, if not you better check out the equipment if it is faulty.

You can always engage someone to help take care of your tank while you are away for a few week or getting your relative or your wife to dose all the necessary addictive while you are away..

Happy Reefing.. !

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm still in consideration of reefing because if I wanted to start again, I wanted it done right and proper. I do not want a "OK" or "so-so" reef tank I had in the past. I also wanted to give myself some time to cool off this idea to make sure it's not a impulse calling...)

Hi Earthborne,

I'm also thinking of starting reefing again, after a lapse of 3yrs - now that my children are older  My previous tank was really a pathetic one - only 2ft IOS FOWLR tank. Have tried some corals, but failed as don't have proper equipments like good protein skimmer and chiller.

This time round, I'm thinking of getting at least a 3ft with sump, good protein skimmer and chiller. Now, I'm looking around to see got good bargain or not and also waiting if any bonus for my mid-year :whistle
