The whole idea of the prawn is to introduce some form of nitrogen and carbon into the tank by decomposition to start of the cycling process. It need not be prawn. Fish food, squid, urine, etc can be used. I think a small prawn for a 4' and more is just right. Smaller tanks should use half a prawn or something less to prevent the water turning anaerobic due to the bacteria bloom. Always prevent good aeration during cycling to reduce the foul smell of hydrogen sulphide.

Don't bother lah yellowbelly. When i cycle my 3.5 ft tank i think i threw in about 8 prawns not knowing it's too much. still ok in the end. cycling took 3 weeks. make sure you have sufficient live rocks and your water circulation is good

of course the liverocks must be in there. if not, where will the beneficial bacteria come from. :P

some people don't recommend the usage of a Protein Skimmer, but I turned mine on nonetheless because mine is semi-cured liverocks. there are still living organisms in that darn thing, and probably waste will be generated. so its running for now.

powerhead for water circulation is a must if you do not have a return system from sump or a close loop.
