chiller keep "kick in"

Recommended Posts

Hi reefer,

As the temp is very warm during the evening and that was when my 4 feet tank light on. 2 blue tubes of T5 lighting from 1530-0030hrs while 1no MH 250 watt start from 1630 to 2230 with another MH light from1730 to 2330 hours.

I set my arctica 1/3 temp. to 27d. The chiller temp will go up to 27.5-28.2d during the lighting period and chiller keep "kicking in". I have also installed to fan on the sump and top of the hood each.

Is the chiller under power for my 4*2*2 tank or need servicing (bought Dec)?

Anyone encounter this problem?

thanks

Hi bro,

1) Give the chiller more ventilation

2) Clean and vacuum the chiller fins

If the air coming out from the chiller is no longer warm, its high time for servicing.

Btw, I was running 1/3 hp for my 4 x 2.5 x 2.5 and I must say it struggle a bit when all lights (2 x 250Mh, 4 x 39T5) are on. Also the heat and noise generate is another concern.

Since then, I have opt for Aircon compressor with Ti coil and I have been enjoying my tank even more.

1/3HP is quite a push for 4 feet tank for most brand. But have been told that Artica chillers are capable of delivering very good chilling strength so a bit surprised that you are having problems.

I am using a 1/2 HP lousy brand chiller and no such problems. Usually kick in 15 mins rest 1 hour during lights on.

weather is very hot this few days n ur chiller is kept in cabinet , n this make things worse. try moving the chiller out n see if the cooling improve. ur chiller is more than enuff for a 4 2 2.

the thing that ppl often make a mislook is they make sure there enuff holes for chiller to vent out the hot air, but they forgot chiller need to intake cool air too. i wonder how is that possible inside the cabinet

Bro ,

this morning, i shifted the chiller out a little bit but still within the cabnet. As today weather is a bit warm, i can really know if it work or not. Now,my chiller is working normally at my set temp of 27d. I will monitor it.

I am happy to know that 1/4 is more than enuff for my tank.

Thanks

Hi Bro,

U sure that 1/4 is enough? I have the same configuration and was told by Dr Chill that I would need a 1/2 HP to run the tank efficently which is the same HP that I have been running my tank for the past years.

Now thinking of upgrading, if 1/4 HP is enough then may just go for it. Can share your temperature setting and the running/resting time for your chiller? Planning to keep the chiller outside my cabinet too.

Thanks.

other brand of chiller i dunno, but i m confident that a 1/4 Artica can easily handle a 4 2 2. my fren is even using a Artica 1/10 to chill his 3 2 2.5 tank. down to 26degree running n resting time is almost same as my 1/2hp chiller. he is using 1 250w + 2 T5 while i m using 6 x T5

My house is facing the afternoon/evening sun rays and i feel warm in the evening. plus the 2 nos 250 watt lighting and T5 tubes, I really feel it.

I am glad to know that 1/4 is good for my 4*2*2 tank.

How offen do i need to service my chiller? I started it new on mid Dec 2008.

Thanks

yup. heard from a number of snr reefers endorsing that 1/4 can indeed support 4ft. However, if you want to play safe, 1/3 will be good. monitor the performance....like it takes 30 mins to lower 1 degree....so if it takes 45 mins ....sometime is wrong...either the chiller needs servicing or your heat load went up. You will still need routine cleaning ....suck out the dust on the aircon "fin"(pronounced as fin but not sure is spelled as this fin), etc. The gas unlikely to use up so fast. Just my 2 cents worth opinion. Subject to correction.

Hi Bro, if you are cleaning your fins periodically the only time you need to service is when hot air is no longer coming out from the chiller and it takes longer to chill your tank.
