Okay, it's official, the LED light is 3.6 times more powerful than the stock JBJ lighting at half the electric consumption. LUX reading:

post-15730-1247461798.jpg

The LED consumes 32 watts, or 48 watts including the fan, compared to the 72 watts of CF lights. Here's the savings in electric bills with the latest tariff of $0.1928, taking into account that my chiller runs for more than 2 hours less per day.

post-15730-1247462110.gif

$6 savings a month might not be a lot, but that is a 22% reduction! Anyway, besides leaving a smaller carbon footprint, I also have the added advantage of keeping my reefing expenses off the bill: no paper trail of evidence = no nagging from gf. A good way to stay off her radar... like a ninja! :fear:

Makes me wanna ask Sherman to diy 1 for me... But price wise... <_< Hehe... Guess i should just get 10 hydor moon lights...

1ft cube with IOS [the low tech tank]

1. JBJ C-breeze to keep temp hovering around 27-28'C

2. LED clip on - 120 bulbs

-skimmer-less-

My 3 humble equipments that keeps my tank running... [DRIED OUT]

1. The RSM itself of course 2.My NEW Deltec MCE-300 Skimmer 3. My trusty Arctica Chiller

Tank parameters:

Temperature maintained at 25.3'C to 24.7'C

No3: 10ppm(b4 the use of the deltec skimmer)

No3: 5ppm (after use of the skimmer)

Others? too lazy to measure...LOL

Haha, the initial money to cough up is always a barrier. I didn't mind spending a bit more cos my plan all along was to create a nano tank that is as complete as possible, and yet remain energy efficient.

My next plan is to change my pump to a lower consumption one, and insulate my chiller hose to minimise temperature gain.

And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it.

Maybe Aquabee, or maybe I'll stick with Rio. Still looking around for something that suits my requirement.

My next challenge is to bring down the monthly bill for the tank set up to sub-$15 level hehehe.

When you decide to keep SPS in future, no need to change light.Just plug in the LENs at the area where you intend to keep the SPS.

But if you decide to go full pledge SPS change the 2 strip of 3 LEDs each to 2 strips of 6 LEDs each.

Bro, $6 might not be the actual savings.

There will be some loss when you step down DC voltage.

It can be quite a lot if you are using poor quality power supply cards.

Have to monitor your bills closely.

The magnetic cord ballast lost is higher than the electronic ballast.

The electronic ballast lost is higher than most of the average DC power supply unit.

Is the hydor moonlight LED 3 watt or 1 watt?

If 1 watt you need at least 100 to cover an area of 1 sq ft.

plus you need a tank of not more than 10 inches

That's 0.1W per LED haha.

I remember a few years ago I was quite swakoo, a contractor quoted me $10k for a project i was working on that involved a LED display, I asked why so much and he said each LED cost $20. I kpkb to him about how they cost 50 cents each at Sim Lim then he point at me and laugh

Start with some small fraq from fellow reefer.

But remember to not place them near the top 3 inch.

I burnt away about 5 fraqs in my experiment

Cheers

Unintended consequence of LED lights, reduction in NO3!!!:

post-15730-1248104925.jpg

Two weeks without water change, last measured at 5ppm, but instead of increasing, it shows 2.5ppm now  . Usually measures at 10ppm after 2 weeks of heavy feeding.

Why unintended? Guess where the nutrients went? Hair algae on the top most rock and chaeto growth, hahahaha! Win some lose some.

A picture of the top piece of rock with hair algae growing (and producing bubbles) on it. The top half of the tank is now a barren landscape, the light is simply too strong for soft corals, which have all been moved down.

The precious real estate on the penthouse level of my rock scape will now be reserved for either SPS or clams hahaha.

Further proof that corals thrive under LED lights:

DSC_4376.jpg

My metallic pink zoas which didn't grow at all under the old tank lights for more than 1/2 a year have started sprouting baby polyps. I returned home last night 12 hours after the photo above was taken, and found an additional 2 baby polyps forming :yeah:

I'd hate to end this update on a depressing note, but I'm sad to say that my pair of tiger-tail seahorses and yellow wrasse have died over the past week. It's almost as if I woke up one day to find that Mother Nature hates all things yellow.

The sudden deaths of the 3 fishes kinda crushed everyone at home, especially when I was rather proud of the fact that I spend considerable effort and time keeping my little tank "death" free since it started. There was no disease break out, no new tank syndrome, no aggression or killing among tank mates (okay, I rescued the purple goby from being eaten, but I sold the offending blotchy anthias away after that).

RIP.

Tiger-tail seahorse (Male) - Died 24th July 2009 from external parasites.

Tiger-tail seahorse (Female) - Died 26th July 2009 from loneliness and heartbreak :(

Both have been with me for more than 8 months, residents from the previous tank.

Yellow Wrasse - Died last night after miscalculating a jump into the IOS and ended up on the filter wool. :(
