Really need Protein skimmer for FOWLR?

Recommended Posts

newbie here need to clear my doubts...

Is it necessary or prefer to have protein skimmer for FOWLR set up?

I have a small tank of 30Litre tank, about 1.5X1.5x1ft tank, all in one type with 3 stage submersible pump and kept about 5 marine fishes.

Such set up... does it necessary to have skimmer? If not, how can I better manage or maintain my tank for healthy living.

pls advise.

you can do without the skimmer, BUT... you must do water changes regularly, around 4 days i think once, 20%.or 1 week once, depending on your nitrate and phosphate.

my 2 cents

Thanks for quick reply and advise. regular water changes of 20% is simply replacing with fresh salt water every wk?

how about cleaning, etc. I have a 1.5 - 2 inch sand bed as well. does it require to take out and clear the wastes like foods poos etc.?

I understand nitrate n phosphate level determine the frequency of water changes. 20% is a norm. gauge?

Do I add water or chemicals to neutralise them and reuse the water? pardon my knowledge.

the % is a rough gauge, for my sandbed, i use the siphon (a open tube at one end connector to a long pipe and the other end is a opening for you to pump manually) --> http://home.pacbell.net/powerfx/images/siphon.jpg <--

i think there are other method to clean the sandbed but thats what i did (to clean up those fish poo and other dirt)

ya the water you replace is either fresh mix salt water or salt water which can be purchase from the LFS.

for now if you dont want to have a skimmer, what i can suggest is you do water changes regularly (if you can't do it, dont bother starting the tank)

Most important thing is that you must let your tank have a good cycling period to cultivate good bacteria, min 4 weeks.

you can buy those phosphate absorber from the LFS.

read up more and you will have a better understanding.

*bros correct me if i am wrong so i can learn too*

happy reefing bro :)

Why r skimmer so ex?!

if I introduce a coral, does it then become a must to have skimmer?

if no skimmer w live coral, same method of frequent water changing n testing applies?

Could u recommend a mini (smallest size) skimmer to handle 30L of water?

I think protein skimmer is a must to all marine aquarium. If you decided to get one, i suggest you getting a good. Don't buy those cheap skimmer, it does not skim well and will waste your money for sure.
