make waves....lol. joking, it is to create circulation or underwater current. There is another type which is wave box. Go to reef depot to see the effect. it will be clearer.

think of it as a fan... w/o a fan, the air in a room will be still. the room will become stuffy and stale air builds up. same thing in the aquarium, still old water = no good for the fish / corals

traditional wavemakers just suck water around it and blow it out in a directed motion.. wavebox works a little differently... it takes in water into a box and drain it out quickily, creating a surge. something to do with resonance... search on youtube and you can see waveboxes in action.
