semeion butterfly

Anyone seen this beauty around? i know ahbeng ever bring in once. This is an uncommon fish in the wild and ahbeng ever bring in once before. dun confuse it with other similar looking bf fishes...the semeion has an unmistakable blue forehead. its beautiful and exquisite. just look at the gorgeous blue forehead!

chaetodon semeion, the semeion or dotted butterflyfish. it does look ABIT like bennet's, mirror and lattice butterfly. but the remarkable neon blue forehead is a giveaway (: adult speciments have a filament trailing from the dorsal fin too. very nice. actually, there are many MANY more beautiful fish in the sea that we dont even get to see in LFS. most of them are not even rare! some are extremely prevalent and common, just that the demand is low and thus, these fishes are not able to make it to our shore (: its a shame that some beautiful and COMMON fish are not exported, while those rare and endangered ones are. keep a look out for the semeion butterfly (:

Nice butterfly, and has wide distribution (that means cheap). But it's not imported because of its larger size, they are bigger butterflies. Can be found in bali shipment at rare occasion when they are able to catch small specimen.

yea. from the fish website, fishbase, it say the range is very wide, but within each area, its quite uncommon. means have big range, but each range very sparse. yep they are the bigger butterflies. very impressed with the blue forehead and the nice filament trailing the dorsal fin (: this is quite unusual in butterflies if im not wrong? i know saddleback, semeion, threadfin and certain others have this too. hope this fish becomes more common in our LFS. its not even that rare. stop catching those rare fishes and catch common and pretty ones like this! Agree that it's a beatiful butterfly, but i hav to disagree on bringing in these butterflies to the trade as it tends to get too big. Larger butterflies are harder to feed and maintain long term in captivity, so its best to leave them in the ocean and this is also one the reason why this butterfly is not commonly seen unless they can obtain small ones large scale. Most of the butterflies we are seeing now are only the popular species that stay small or grow slowly.

guess ur right. too big harder to maintain! (: already those bigger ones like golden butterfly are quite common nowadays. haha.
