steven lee
Hi fellow reefers need to know which is the better skimmer, Red Sea, Octopus, weipro and what else I really don't know. Mine's a 322 setup with sump tank. I saw many reefers selling 2nd hand skimmer but don't know the price range what is a good buy and which is a better brand? and which model is most suitable for my setuo. Thanks. SRC Member vt_snowman87 Posted January 9, 2009 SRC Member Share Posted January 9, 2009 among the 3 u mentioned, Reef Octopus is the best... it is okay to use for ur 3 feet tank.. dun stock too heavily though.. i would recommend beckette skimmer, price for 2nd hand, around 200.. it is powerful and more than enough for ur 3feet.. it is better to overskimm than to underskimm in my opinion.. SRC Member Ah-lim Posted January 9, 2009 SRC Member Share Posted January 9, 2009 If you interested, can pop by my place to see an octopus skimmer. Budget. Not selling though.

Hi Bro You might want to get more opinion on what type (not what brand yet) of skimmer to use. Whether Venturi, Needle Wheel or Beckett skimmer. Each of them have their Pros and Cons. Be it price, performance, power comsumption, scalability...etc. 322 is not a small tank. RedSea skimmer (if you are referring to RedSea Prizm Deluxe), then it might be too small for you. I am using RedSea skimmer for my quarantine tank. The biggest quarantine I have is 80 L only. My 2 cents: Do more read up. Can seek advice from senior reefer, however final decision is your call. Decide on the type of skimmer first. Then look up for the brand and cost. Decide on whether to purchase new or 2nd hand. As for over-skimming, there are 2 school of thoughts so far I read. I might be wrong. Some say then you can never overskim a tank. However others mention that over skimming not only take out waste , but also take out good elements. Read more and decide which direction to go. Hope this help.
