Hey, Does high Nitrates affect fish colorations? I have my fox face and Sailfin Tang that seem to have pale color for the past 1 year. Anyway, my Nitrate is above 40ppm. Have been trying to reduce to at least 10ppm(better yet, 0) for months but to no avail.

Reefing since 2003
 4ft x 2ft x 2ft Mixed Reef (BB):-
50 Gal Sump,

Apex Controlled System (Lab grade),
Deltec SC1455 Protein Skimmer,
Vortech MP40wQD,

Jebao RW-15

Maxspect Razor 320w
Eheim 1260 Return Pump,
Hailea HS-66A 1/4HP chiller,
TLF Reactor 150, running HydroCarbon

Keep doing 10% -20%water change every 3 days...until yr nitrate improve; yr nitrate will drop. Use siphon to suck out the waste on the sand bed.

I think there's some filter medium u can get with FR in the long run to control them.

Generally, for fish high nitrates(>50ppm) is not recommended.

What sort of filter media are you using? They do play a part in nitrate levels. I used to use bioballs in my previous 4ft setup and face high nitrate problems, now i only use sand + liverock, i don't face any high nitrate problem anymore.

You can invest in a denitrator to reduce nitrates or get some biohome as filter media. Biohome is designed to allow dentrification to take place which reduces nitrates.

Biohome is good...i m using it. Get one box n chuck it into yr sump.
