SRC Member ervine Posted November 30, 2003 SRC Member Share Posted November 30, 2003 Hi guys, I know of both Eye lighting and Chuan Huat Lighting House, but they are a little too out of the way for a person without a car like myself... I basically need only the ballast, capacitor, ignitor and holder... Thanks!
SRC Member ervine Posted December 1, 2003 Author SRC Member Share Posted December 1, 2003 Well since no one replied me, I went to figure things out myself... Here's what I found out... Chua Huat Lighting, control gear WITHOUT E40 socket $60 Eye Lighting, didn't get back to me So in the end I went searching a little longer and found this.. Viclite Check out the top left hand corner one.. that's the one I got.. $75 ($78 with GST) without bulb... Considering $60 is not only just the parts but also without E40 socket and without a proper casing and reflector... So I went ahead with it, friendly boss too!... here's what it looks like after I got it back... Before I go on, do take note that this thing is HEAVY and VERY BIG!! So do take note of this... the ballast is the thing that weighs a ton...
SRC Member ervine Posted December 1, 2003 Author SRC Member Share Posted December 1, 2003 The previous post is the top of the casing, with ample holes for attaching cables, and a hole for the wire to come out... Below is a picture of the bottom view of the casing, notice the area at the back is for the control gear, it's vented but I'm probably going to DIY a fan at closer side to cool the bulb further... SRC Member ervine Posted December 1, 2003 Author SRC Member Share Posted December 1, 2003 Here's a view of the control gear inside... all the wiring done up less the one from the mains... I'm probably going to remove this and change it to an external box... because it REALLY weighs a ton!!!
SRC Member ervine Posted December 1, 2003 Author SRC Member Share Posted December 1, 2003 Here's a look at the individual components, firstly the ballast... I think it's an electronic one... not too sure Australian made... (also not that I realised all the wires are thermally insulated not with PVC but rather that cloth like material)
SRC Member nemesis Posted December 1, 2003 SRC Member Share Posted December 1, 2003 nice work.
SRC Member ervine Posted December 1, 2003 Author SRC Member Share Posted December 1, 2003 Now we have the ignitor... (also note that all parts are attached onto the revolving metal plate, but can be detached if required) Made in australia
SRC Member ervine Posted December 1, 2003 Author SRC Member Share Posted December 1, 2003 The capacitor... with capacitor holder too... Capacitor made in UK
SRC Member ervine Posted December 1, 2003 Author SRC Member Share Posted December 1, 2003 Lastly we have the tempered glass... although SE bulbs are UV filtered, I think the glass is good to allow for spash protection... The reflector is very shiny aluminium protected by a plastic covering...
SRC Member untouchables Posted December 1, 2003 SRC Member Share Posted December 1, 2003 great work with your investigation. good news for the rest who has been looking for affordable mh lights. now i got no excuse not to go mh except no chiller i dont think it is eballast cos eballast is over $200 juz for the darn think. eballast is supposedly much cooler but if you are going to take the ballast out of the box, do put it far far away so that your tank will not get much temp increased. SRC Member ervine Posted December 1, 2003 Author SRC Member Share Posted December 1, 2003 All in all, except for it's size and weight I think it's a pretty decent buy... now to DIY a blowhole, shift the control gear externally and wait for Edmund to pass me my bulb and I'll be done! Oh.. forgot to mention that this is for a 250W MH.... Also, not many pieces left... so those who want can give the company a call to make sure u don't lose out or anything... SRC Member ervine Posted December 1, 2003 Author SRC Member Share Posted December 1, 2003 Oh... IMPT... please note that I HAVE NOT tried this with the bulb in place... so not 100% sure if it will work, but I don't see why it won't lah!.. If you want to know, it's 2ft long, about 1 ft wide and about 0.6 feet high... VERY big if you ask me.... but mainly it's because of the control gear compartment lah... and like "untouchables" mentioned, yup I don't think it's electronic... heh... sorry for that. Their prices are very competitive, including their BLV bulbs! I think they are carrying almost all the common brand of MH bulb to be use for Marine. SRC Member ervine Posted December 1, 2003 Author SRC Member Share Posted December 1, 2003 Yup... 10 bucks more than Edmund's bulk order for the BLV 250W 10k bulb...
robe
I bought my bulb there as well, I think we should support them for bringing in affordable lighting fixtures and bulb without strings attached. Their bulb prices are reasonable and not excessively priced by making a decent profit but not excessive profit. I know the factory pricing for bulbs as I have enquired directly with a German distributor for lighting before. At that time Singapore (1 year ago) was not ready for bringing in large quantity of MH bulbs as market was too small then unlike now. Most of the time the LFS bulbs are sold at almost 200-300% of the costs. That tells you about the margins they're making. I hope nobody calls them up and tell them to control pricing. That's why the name has not been revealed until recently. Hopefully the LFS cartel do not convince to increase pricing. A 250w 20000K costs around 40 Euros each if buying in bulk with minimum order amount of 2000 Euros.

SRC Member Cookiemunster Posted December 2, 2003 SRC Member Share Posted December 2, 2003 Actually if anyone is looking for 150W MH complete set without bulb, can look for orgasbt. I got my set from him for only $85. And it comes with UV filtered glass. The bulb holder is a rectangular piece which is very small, only about 25cm x 10cm. The ballast etc is in a separate box so you don't have to hang the whole heavy thing on top. By the way its a DE set. PM him for more details. His nick here is Orgasbt. Tell him cookie recommended. Delivery included somemore. Very nice guy. Strongly recommend. Quote My Humble 4ft tank
