SRC Member tropic Posted September 10, 2011 SRC Member Share Posted September 10, 2011 Hi all, I do not have any sump so change from the main tank, btw where do you guys siphon out the water from? I just siphon it out from the surface, is it the same? The last time I change water was 4 months ago most syphon from main tank and if barebottom they remove the detritus too. if you siphone from surface the air may go inside the tube but i guess it shouldnt matter much. u siphon at same time remove those leftover food etc. some change evry week, some once two weeks some 20% end month..some nvr change and swear by their tank still survives. which ever works. but i prefer 20% end month.lol

ntwdavid
Out of so many votes i see that 32 people never change water at all. Any of the 32 Sifu(s) out there, care to share what are the additives you use to maintain your tank? changing water every week is a very tiring thing for me, especially when commitment are getting more and more. SRC Member John Deroe Kenedy Posted September 11, 2012 SRC Member Share Posted September 11, 2012 Since upgraded to 3ft tank. I do water change of 20% every 1 month. Kinda of troublesome to do weekly water change due to tank height + cabinet is 5ft high, no access to RO/DI system. But i regularly clean my skimmer, change filter socks. And Since i'm using Prodibio Digest, I'm able to keep Nitrate level very low.. 2.5ppm ever since i started using it... SRC Member John Deroe Kenedy Posted October 16, 2012 SRC Member Share Posted October 16, 2012 Got a QNS tho.. Is there a need to change water twice a month even if Nitrite level seems low... I'm able to get 2.5ppm of nitrite full month, po4 is low due to reactor + rowaphos... Its tedious for me to change water weekly or bi weekly coz cabinet is 2.5ft tall, tank is 2.5 feet tall + additional hood... My monthly water change is set on 18th every month.. filter sock change every 3 days.. Prodibio digest added evey 2 weeks.. mengyang_neo
The purpose of water change is more then just reducing nutrient, it also replace the element and other stuff used up by the coral. Unless u are dosing element into the water every now and then, the element will be used up. For Lps tank, the observation is not so obvious but for sps tank it is quite obvious. Guys good to read more and not just follow reefer advice. Every reefer tank is different so what he/she do might not be suitable to your tank. One of the example is a reefer tell me he is told by another reefer, only need to change water every 6mth and the tank is doing well but why his tank is not doing well. The reefer that told him this method is keeping softies and Lps tank, while this newbie here is trying to go for full sps. 1 Quote 5x2.5x1.5ft Rimless Dream Tank (06/03/12) Skimmer - Reefoctupus Return Pump - 1 x Eheim 1264, 1 x water blaster 7kWavemaker - 2 x mp40esChiller - Daikin compressor with coil drop inLighting - 4 x 80w T5 Pair 1(6hrs23/12/12),Pair 2(16/06/12312hrs 2 x 80w De-lighting Retrofit (1/3/12) -(15/11/12)6hrs and 2 x 80w De-lighting Retrofit (13/10/12) -6hrs) Reactor - Dosing pump (01/01/11)
SRC Member solasido Posted October 17, 2012 SRC Member Share Posted October 17, 2012 To add on, those elements that we dose are major elements, but there are many trace elements that are not easy to detect/measure that will be refilled by water changes. patricklhc
I started my tank about 2-3mths now. Never really did any wc until today. My anemone used to open up nicely and nice translucent pink. Until a few days ago it start to open up only a little and dark pink show up. So did a water change and now it's opening up nicely again and the pinkish tip is back too.. I do weekly dosing of kh buffer mag cal iodine strontium and trace element all from reef max I guess no matter what I dose wc is still a important task to replace any unknown to me element to keep the livestock happy

SRC Member John Deroe Kenedy Posted October 18, 2012 SRC Member Share Posted October 18, 2012 Big regular water change isnt cost effective for big tanks... for low demand tank, yes, regular water change is effective, maybe about 10%-20% water change.. but for mid - high demand tank, u need to do more volume of water change to replenish the elements which i think its really not cost effective. Even for mid-high demands tank, weekly water change of 10%, it still not enough to replenish the lost elements. i rather do manual dosing.. very much affordable as im dosing Randy's 2 part solution and trace elements...
