rocks>>> not much coraline but some green/gray algae instead?

A big hello to all the reefers here,

i'm a newbie to marine keeping, and htis is my first tank. need some help in identifying and ascertaining something. would really appreciate it if u guys can help out!

my rocks have been in the tank for quite some time. some about 1 mth, others abt 2 mths. i have been dosing regularly some "CoralUp" and i have yet to see any difference in coraline growth.

In fact, when the lights are off, with a little lighting from my celiling light, it looks like there are more green/gray fluffly stuff on the rocks (the parts that are not purple). Why is this? Is this another kind of algae? Is this normal?

I've been getting a lot of tiny snails, though! Why is that?

The tank residents:

1 x blue legged hermit

1 x turbo snail

1 x mandarin

1 x scooter blenny

1 x fire goby

2 x false perculas

2 x feather dusters

1 x sand dollar

equipment:

- 1 and 1/2 ft glass tank

- dolphin c-500 canister filter

- 24W PL light (one white tube, and one blue tube), abt 1 ft in length.

- boyu hang-on protein skimmer

- 1 to 1 and 1/2 inch sandbed. no rubble or luka shells.

water testing:

results are within range for carbonate hardness, pH, NO2 and NO3, phosphate, and ammonia too.

pls advise!

i'm sorry the pic quality is just an overview of the tank, taken with a handphone camera. not very good quality, and much worse when i try to take a shot of the 'algae'. hope my description helps?

P/S: just a guess, but do u think that some of the corals are not doing well, maybe dying, as such, causing the 'algae' growth?

Hi Bro, nice scaping you have there. For coraline algae, it needs calcium and magnesium. With good water quality and enough lighting, it will come. Just be patience. Some of your corals are not easy to keep, for example cauliflower. You mentioned about the greenish stuff might be algae. You may wish to have a FR with PO remover media to reduce algae issue. just my 2 cents worth of comment. Nevertheless, it is a good start and welcome to this hobby. : )

dun put your dun filter thingy near to the sand..correct me if i'm wrong..or my eyes play trick on me..at the background i saw the part of flter dunno wat its call...near the sand..it can spoil your filter.. if sand went in..

anyway guys, there seems to be some brown semi-translucent stuff on my glass too, and my snails are all over it.. is that algae too? i cant clean it off properly without hurting the snails. what do u all recommend?

Given the size of your tank, I would suggest keeping the no. of livestock low. I only have ard 4 livestock in my 1 ft tank.

For price of FR, ya can do a search in this forum for the 2nd hand price.

Lastly, i think you need a small wave maker to create some flow.

The brown stuff is algae. wipe it.

Lastly, i would recommend reading up a bit on the net too. Google.

hi bro, jux 2 share wat i went tru...previously i oso had the same problem as u...brown/green algae and no coraline...bt after i gt a FR and an additional wavemaker to increase the water flow, i do not haf ne more problem wif algae, at the same time, managed to kip my phosphate in check, omost undetectable...previously i placed my phosphate media in my filter box...bt nt much effect..bt after using FR...can't believe the amazing result...den i started to dose aquapharm A n B wkly to maintain high KA and MG and nw, half of my wavemaker is encrusted wif coraline, as well as the background of my tank...

juz a humble opinion of mine...btw i onli started reefing in aug...so is stil considered a super newbie...maybe other bros and sis wif more experience will be able to advise u beta

Hi guys, sorry i am very very new to marine and stuff, i wish to ask fellow experts, what could be the cause of the rock to become greenish (aka algae)?

some of the rocks is redish (Coraline) and some of it is greenish, but most of it i should say 60% of it is greenish when the lights is not on. Someihow the coraline just wont grow.

the Prostrate level is quite low. 0.01.

the calcuim is quite high is around 488 - 492.

Mg is around 112- - 1200

was wondering what could be the cause of this. Sorry the Tank is a 3 feet tank.
