forgot to mention, using the tube will allow the skimmate to function non-stop.

Stopping the skimmer, to remove the cup for cleaning, you will have to give the skimmer a few hours to kick-start again.

Also for your case, your sump will stop 'functioning' untill your second compartment is full, then water flow to the third one.

In my own case, I use a tube to seal it. then drain the skimmate once in a while through the drain hole using a cup. :)

actually for the Berlin , it skims right away after cleaning so I don't need a few hours to kick start ....you mentioned about the "sump" will stop functioning? The flow of water doesn't really stop though as all I have to do is switch off the pump to the skimmer and pull the whole inner tube of the Berlin out for cleaning. :D

In dinosaur's defence... I have read and re-read his postings regarding his concerns and advice and detect no hint of malice. There should be no need for hostility and over-sensitivity with regards to his advice.
