Live Sand

Recommended Posts

I have just set up a 24G cube tank yesterday, and have added live rocks and live sand. Was told that since live sand is used, can add fish in a few days time. When is the optimal time to start adding livestock, and in what sequence? Eg, corals first, then shrimps, then fish? Thanks for your advice.

Hi Bro, welcome to this hobby. Firstly, for tank recycling....you can first measure the ammonia and NO level. For initial start-up, these 2 parameters will spike first and subsequently drop to zero. There are few ways to speed up...include liverock, add good bacterias, etc. For the coral, fishes and inverts, please plan what you want to keep and from there the compatibility. For fishes, from less aggressive to fierce fish. For inverts, it is ok but some inverts will eat the other...like some hermit will eat snail, and some snails are harmful to coral, etc. Sorry to confuse you but this hobby needs patience and reading. Lots of things to learn. Pardon me. Just my 2 cents worth of opinion. Newbie also.

Solo77, thanks for your advice. Indeed it is important to cycle the tank properly first. It is just that, having spent an extra $40 to get live sand instead of normal sand, I thought this might mean I can put in livestock earlier...and it is Sunday tomorrow, and I happen to be around LCK, where Coral farm is.... :eyebrow:

lol....bro....that might be too fast but adding inverts should be ok.....for fishes...lck and coral farm are good places. Their fishes are good and some are exotic ones. Suggest you go pasir ris farm to get some common nice fishes to start with....like fire goby, etc. All the best.
