how many watts of LED are you looking at? using a 5ft tank, the cost of the LED will cost u a bomb.....

It can varies anything from 300 watt to 450 watt. I think is about the same price as any of the

reputable MH or T5 or MH/T5 combination........

But you are going to save in the long run on running cost and part replacement....

oh :paiseh: ..may be I understatement for 5ft tank.

For my 2ft, less than S$500 for 22 LED finished good.

I'm using meanwell ELN60 PS so save alot due to no extra LED driver used and LED from DealExtreme also save some cost.

IMHO, no driver is perfect even Buckpuck <_< . ELN-30-27 or ELN-60-48 is good to run a string of LEDs in serial if want to be safer side. :eyebrow: .

I'm running ELN-60-27 in parallel and the current and voltage can be further adjusted down by 5%.

The V & A for the Meanwell PS is very stable, and I have no issue using it.

If In serial, as I mentioned my previuos post is ELN-30-27 or ELN-60-48 which has the Amp of 1.12 and 1.3 respectively.

If you run in parallel the total current of the driver is divide between all the parallel rungs.

If one of the rung has problem,this same current of the driver is now divide between all the existing rung

minus one.

Hence the current through each rung now is higher .

If this is uncheck or not notice in time, the higher current in each of the running rung now generate more heat.

which if not check and exceed the optimium temperature of the LED will deteriorate or shorten the life of the LED.

This process will continue if left uncheck till all the LED is overheated and burnt out.

Unless you have proper protection circuit in place for each rung it is not advisable to run LED in parallel.

I do forsee such problem may happen in my initial LED diy plan lor :ph34r: so I have already incorporated a simple current mirror circuit at the end of the string by using transistors and resistor to prevent over-driven liao :eyebrow: .

After mounting all the LED and wireup found I cannot mount all the LENs

Use the wrong size mounting screws,M3 instead of M2

Have to dismantle all the LEDs and send for re drill and tap

Lesson learn

All I can say is I am EXTREMELY happy with the results. I got the 6 led strip royal blues and they really make the corals go pop!

PS: Is it ok to run the Leds without the optics? As my tank is really small it has a little spotlight effect. Any potential electrical disasters if saltwater splashes onto the circuit board or leds?

To be safe than sorry..I would advice you to box up/casing the LED strip :ph34r: !

If you need to solder the 6 leds and connect them up to the constant current driver and DC adaptor yourself it is going to take at least half an hour. So the strip help you save a lot of time and trouble :eyebrow:

If your base is less then 18 inch remove the LENS.

The LED strip will be shorted if water splash on it.

You can just sit the whole strip on a perspec sheet or in a casing with perspec shield.
