IMO,

You need at least a canister filter

Best if you can use a sump

Hi I am also new to the hobby. Just added one tang fish to my aquarium. Hope to share with you whatever, i have read in the internet.

First, you need to "cycle" your tank using live rock, approx. 1 month. This is to introduce all the necessay bacteria. You might want to consider using thin sand bed (nitrifying bacteria) or consider a DSB (Deep sand bed) to encourage denitrifying bacteria. If you are thinking of a fish tank rather than a reef tank, thin sand bed is recommended as the a fish tank may overwhelm the DSB.

However, the disadvantage of using thin sand bed is that the nitrates in the water is not get rid off, unless your live rock is of good quality and of sufficient quantity.

As for the light, go for lights of minimum CRI 5500, or better still 6500 i.e. blue white light instead of white light.

Finally, add your fishes slowly to allow the tank to mature. Hope my simplistic explanation can help you. There are mamy more articles in the internet that are really useful. Cheers.
