DIY Drop-In Chiller through Aircon Compressor

Hi,

I am planning to setup a 3x3x2.5 reef tank for my new place. Was advised that one of the newer and more efficient way to chill the tank is to use the aircon unit. ie. connect a cooling coil to the output of an aircon compressor. I like the idea as I prefer not to have a conventional chiller located in the cabinet or next to the tank with warm air blowing into the living room. Caveat of course is to diy the cooling coil.

Have spoken to my air-con man, all he can do is to connect the copper tubing and the thermostat control wires from the aircon compressor to where the cabinet is. He doesn't know how to connect and setup the cooling coil.

I have been searching this forum and goggling for info but have so far not found anything really useful. Just wondering if anyone here has done this or know of any aircon/aquarium experts who has the know how to do this. I believe it's a matter of connecting to a titanium/copper coil (may need to coat it with something) and setup the thermostat to a control unit to view and adjust the temperature.

Any advise or contacts would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

For me, I bought air-con compressor, temperature controller and contactor and got my Air-con contractor to do the piping and installation.

But instead of an exposed drop-in coil, I chose a concealed evaporator from Resun. It is similar to the one below but mine is from Resun.

What's the pump capacity for this unit ? within your return pump flowrate ?

If additional pump needs to drive this, then addition heat might be added.

FOWLR Tank : 48"x24"x30"

Sump: 36"x18"x20"

Return Pump : Rio 32HF

Skimmer: Reef Octopus DNW-110

Lighting: 150W MH

Got mine from Teck Hoe, for reefers who frequent Malaysia, can get from there too, prices are very competitive there and many reefers there uses them vs Singapore.

I use a AB2000 for pump water to the evaporator and back to sump.
