Just faced another drama in my tank over the last 7 days and hence the poll. I personally dont have any quarantine facilities currently which may have resulted in my 2nd tragedy of massive ICH outbreak in the year.

It all started with a new addition Achilles Tang which we all know is ICH prone. It was infested with ICH and has since surrendered its IC last week. Since then my other LS wasnt spared and I've lost my Blue spotted Jawfish and Blackcap with a few others also showed Ich infection.

Added Reefsafe Medications as of last night but not sure how effective it will be. I ran a 9W Corallife UV on my 4ft but it may be under powered as I understand.

I am seriously thinking of setting up a quarantine tank after these 2 painful dramas. There are some questions which I have which I hope some seniors can advise.

1. Do you keep your QT running even though it may be empty? Ie Skimmer and Powerhead.

2. Do you run medication in your QT for all new fishes even though they may appear healthy and ICH free?

You need not practically have a "tank" to quarantine your fishes...

A Ikea Container with a sponge filter and a airpump will do a fine job...

As long as the container that the fish in is big enough for it..

Regular water changing is a must, once every few days, siphon out the leftover food and clean the filter...

I wouldnt say medication but as a preventive measure it always good to add some Furan in the QT and it is not toxic to corals and invertebrate, so even if it leak into your main tank, there wun be much of a problem...

I have always wanted to ask this for a Q. tank and hope those experienced reefers can share:

1) The water used must be the same as the main tank? Meaning using the main tank water for Q.tank.

2) If not, NSW or salt mixed water is preferred?

3) If using new water( be it NSW/salt mixed water), cycling of the Q.tank needed?

4) I think ideally, the salinity of the Q. tank should be lower than the standard for fish, to prevent ich outbreak?

5) What's the requirement when introducing fish back to the main tank from Q.tank?

:thanks:

generally salinity level set lower will hv more oxygen for fishes

always use the main tank water for quratine for e 1st time cus the 1st is already stress in e environment

1-2 days do 50% change with same salinity but newly mixed SW n maintain medications..

it depend on whether u r qurantine a sick fish n whether r u qurantine a newly introduce fish..

its different..

Terry is right. what i am planning to do is just used container from Fairprice with skimmer and liverock and add cupreamine to a concentration of 0.25ppm. The fish will be quarantine to eradicate all parasite before goinginto main tank.

2x1.5x1.5 tank

Lighting: AI hydra 52HD

Skimmer: Deltec SC 1455

Reactor: Minimax; rowaphos

Skimz  ; NP biopellets

Wave Maker: MP 40 WQD

Return pump: Eheim 1262

Chiller: Arctica 1/10 hp

hi there i don't really quarantine just get a pail and put all of them in the pail with the water from the packet with air pump for bout 1hr see weather are they stress or relaxing one corner if most of them are relaxing one corner i'll try on some food droping with mixer of sea weed dry blood worm and the frozen food from henry if all behaving normally and most of it start nibber on the food it should be ok to net it to the main tank but not the water in the pail most of all the water KH must be at least 9 and bove below 14 best for fishes to adapt faster then 5-7KH
