MH + chiller users - do u use a fan?

It would be interesting to see the number of reefers here who use both MH and a chiller and who also use a fan at the same time to aid in water evaporation and hoping to let their chiller run less often

In the past when my old Teco was struggling with the rare UK summers, i used a large fan blowing across the top of the tank. No question it made a significant difference to the time that the chiller ran. The fan pulling the temperature down faster than the chiller could.

It must add up to quite a cost saving over the year.

I do not use a fan here, just a chiller and some nice air-con

Fans are important whenever my MH turns on. Its my safety belt in case my chiller stops or malfunctions or chiller pump fails etc.

It also helps me speed up evaporation so my auto top up water gets to top up more often through my kalk reactor, ie more kalk into the tank.

And saves me electricity cos my chiller runs less often.

but i thought blowing at the bulb will shorten the lifespan of the bulb?

not for SE bulbs, its not really possible for you to cool the MH with a fan to a point where it burns below its normal temperature.

When blowing directly at a SE bulb, you are only cooling the UV shield which would not affect the internal temperature of the halide gas envelope.

im not blowing at the bulb, just drawing out the hotair

i am also using it as a sucktion fun too. draw heat out from the light hood, although my hood had no canopy, but it really help.

i diy two computer fan on the hood and draw the heat that given out by MH out the surface water. Surface temp maint at about 25.6 and the bottom at about 25.3. B4 that the surface temp is about 26.2.

the water level seen ok, only need to top up once a week about 5l.
