Brown Algae

Hi Marine Hobbyist Experts,

I'm a newbie and my tank has been up and running for 3 weeks.

However, i start to notice brown algae appearing on the sand bed and my pump.

Does ozoniser remove these algae? or what are the solutions to this upcoming problem?

i checked my water, PH is 8.4, nitrite and nitrate is less than 10 and i'm using Jebo 180 protein skimmer + external cannister filter.

No wave maker as the aquarium shop says there's no need for a 2ft tank, so i did not install one.

Your tank still not cycled yet.

those are called diatoms. It's normal during cycling stage. Switch off ur lights(if u are switching it on all these while). As for wave makers, it's good to have one to aerate(to expose to the action or effect of air or to cause air to circulate through). As u can see for marine tank we do not use air pump like we do for freshwater tank to generate oxygen. Wavemaker is also efficient to reduce ur tank's deadspot which might result in cyano bacteria bloom. Hope this helps.

Different people give me different answers..some say install wave maker, some say no need.

Anway, i will observe further and install the wave maker when the tank matures.

Wavemaker helps to circulate ur tank and if placed at right spot, helps to reduce dead spot whereby diatom, red slime and nuisance algaes tend to populate easily. Of cos, get the right wavemaker according to ur tank size. If u have a strong wavemaker in a small tank, u'll be creating sand storm and corals will not survived under harsd currents.

If the current still is quite strong, can shield the wavemaker with some live rocks.

Ya, i used tap water when i setup my tank initially...so kinda kicking myself now...haha.

Situation is not too bad right now...but i forsee they grow fast if i do not do something and just sit there.

I will turn on my ozoniser and see if the situation improve coz that should reduce the nitrate and ammonia levels...vital nutrients for algae to manifest.

FYI, those corals u see behind is just my background pic...dun know y the aquarium uncle just want to put that pic...anyway its free.

run a FR will help.....next time use DI water for water change, else ur prob never going to end

Brown algae could be due to your new tank setup using tap water and with lights on. Since you have added corals, you can't turn off the lights now as yr corals need it. Since your tank is small, can use bottled distilled water (those ntuc brand also can) for water change and top up. Once yr ammonia and nitrite turns to zero readings, you can add cleaning crews like turbo snails to help clean up some of the algae.

I noticed now the brown algae are starting to turn green...hope its a good sign

Bought 3 cleaner blennies to tackle the algae from Jiireh...but gana bully by my bi-colour blenny and they have to spend their time avoiding this bully.

Looks like i have to buy algae blenny to the rescue.

bro not all blenny take all kinds of algaes..

algae blenny takes more of those brown algae on the glass..

as for the green stubbon algae.. use DI/RO or distill water to stop it from coming back..

Another effective method...dont turn on the light.....kekekeke....only can use this if not keeping corals but u still need to maintain the quality on your water top - up.
