Hi there,

I need some advice here.

3 days ago, i bought a star polyps from J_ R_h at west coast. Looks great so i was tempted to buy.

After i placed them in my tank (2ft), they dun seem to open, even though i feed them with phytoplankton.

I checked my temp, it is constant at 28 degrees with my T5 lights on and my nitrite and nitrate levels are low.

Just wondering wat happen?

Hi, nitrite must be zero. What's your PH and hardness? Any other coral in your tank.

My nitrite is zero. My PH level is 8.4 n KH is 10d.

I have a couple of mushrooms- giant mushrooms, toadstool and tube worms.

Had feed my corals with phytoplankton daily.

Water movements are moderate.

My star polyps were doing fine when one day only about half of the polyps came out and then for the next few days lesser and lesser polyps appeared until the polyps began to stop coming out. The purple base of the polyps even began to recede and shrink, I thought it was going to die and melt away. My water flow is moderate while I'm using 250W MH by the way.

I sat on my sofa wondering what was wrong with it since it has been blooming ever since I bought it when suddenly I saw my sixline swim past it and took a quick nip at it before swimming away. I quickly took my star polyps and put it in the sump.

3 days later under 18W 6500k Philips energy saver refugium lights the polyps are coming out again. But I think I am gonna have to let it go since I love my sixline.

was ur star poly placed at low flow area ? if yes, try placing it at mid to high flow area with light. they tends to opens with higher flow, even with wavemaker directing at it

Ok, thanks for the advice...will place them at a higher level...coz right now it is placed at mid level.

Looks like i have to get a wavemaker as brown algae is appearing also.

I have an ozoniser, but bcoz my tank is only in its 3rd week, i am adviced not to on it yet.

I would say first ur tank is too early for any corals or fishes to be added in. allow more time for cycling to have a gd start for ur tank. Else u will be running into lotsa of hipcups like fishes and corals dying...

Secondly, u mention brown algae appearing, not sure if it is diatom or red slime ? Is it on the sand bed or rocks ? Could be phosphate level high ? wat wavemaker u having in the tank ? Do some test of ur water perimeter too

Btw, is feeding phytoplankton good enough for soft corals ? or any other recommendations?

Thanks bro!

U r welcome bro. Place them near the glass wall and the star polys will grow and cling onto the wall
