Hitch hiker crab

Hi Guys,

Anybody id this tiny crab. It is about 1/2" body, pointy claws. Seems to clean up uneaten food. Have 1 clown. 2 turbos , colony of brown star polyps and 2 blue legged hermits. Nothing attacked yet!!!

How big is "big" before it gets to be a problem? I am due to receive some soft coral tomorrow, will it harm it?

Ultimately, I suggest that if you don't want the crab, get rid of it as it WILL grow bigger and it has to strength to topple your live-rock. Yes now it will eat whatever is left-over at the bottom, but it may get so big that one day will attack your fish. I have a tank in my school, I have a 2.5" foxface and due to a Public Holiday, when I return back to school after a 4 -days (Public Holiday+Weekend), the foxface disappear without any trace - I think the crab attacked the foxface. So in my opinion, get rid of it while you can.

Either you can get rid of it or throw it in your sump to eat detritus. For me I hate to kill stuff except aiptasia which grosses me out So I just throw any crabs, snails, etc in my sump. Out of sight, out of mind

recently my tank cleaner shrimp went MIA. u think the crab eat it . got any idea how to get rid of tis hairy crab. when light off it come out.

Haven't got rid of crab yet - I am trying to stalk it and spear it when opportunity arises. Cruel,\but as I have a Nano there is not much room and the "bottle" trap won't work!

hi mate good rule of thumb with crabs if they have pointy claws they are usually a problem best dealt with the rounder clawed type are more grazers

I also saw that with new piece of rock I got one of these. Is it possible that this crab could've killed my pink reef crab?

All was fine for week or 2 then - dead pink reef crab...

If the critter is only 1/2", a small glass bottle would do. Should not take up too much space in your tank.

I have 3 of these in my nano! Never seem to bother anything. They can be observed grazing on algae if I'm care enough not to spook them. I think my Banded coral shrimp is a bigger nuisance than these guys.

Thanks for the advice - have decided to let it live! You are right, it is doing no harm at the moment! Will monitor the situation because it is growing quite fast!
