Does it mean that we have to do this feeding as long as we keep the sun?

Yes, you'll need to target feed yr suns for them to open. Feed a little first just to entice them to open before giving them the main feed.

How does the Sun actually eat? Do they actually grab the mysis shrimp and put into their "mouth"?

I have sun coral for about 2 weeks now and they have'nt opened up yet. Only open up somtimes like 40% only

Yesterday I started target feeding them by using syringe. Use zooplankton mix with mysis shrimp and slowly drip some into their mouth individually. No response from them .. sigh.. even turn off skimmer , wavemaker and pump while doing that also tried inverting a cut up 1.5L bottle to cover them and then feed. Gave up after 30 mins.

Then later on about 1 hr later then they open up about 60%.. thats the biggest they've opened so far :) Hope I'm doing alright.

This afternoon feed them same method again but they din even bother to open up. Maybe too full? kekekeke

Will continue feeding them and hopefully will open up fully someday.

feed them at different intervals of the day and they will learn to open the moment there is food in the water anyway they wont die that easily if they miss a meal or 2, so eventually they will know they have to grab fast or no more food, but for new suncorals good to do a cyclopeeze feed dipping to fill them up

Sigh... I just got sunnies too last Saturday so it's been with me almost 2 weeks.. it opens, closes, opens closes until I am very confused! :P I guess i'm confused more than the sunny is confused!

It was opening very well the past 4-5 days during the day time but yesterday when I came back from work it was completely close and today it's still closed. I have been throwing in allot of food (rotifers, coral bloomer and zooplankton) in the tank and turning off my skimmer for 1 hour or so and yet it does not open. I even took out the whole sunny and put it in a seperate container to plonk mysis shrimp on it hoping it would reach out and grab it but nothing's happening..

ARUGH... it's a lovely piece but I just don't want it to die.. any reefers out there who can enlighten me what's the signs I should look out for? DO sunnies close up if they feel "full" as I have been constantly feeding them everyday.... :P I tried to find answers those but I didn't see any.

here's a picture I took on wednesday of the sunny when it was open.. now it's all tightly closed :(

What i did was i dose Live Plankton 2 days once

Feed my fishs and corals with Cyclop-eeze everyday

The sun will grap the food itself,u can also feed it with mysis

normally sun will open bigger when your lights is off,

they dont like bright light and also like middle flow

here's the pic of my sunny

I'm not sure why they sometimes close up and refuse to open for days. I had black suns that were doing ok until I place a torch coral nearby. I thought the distance was far enough but the black suns seem to disagree. After a few days, the side nearest the torch refused to open even when feeding. In the end I had to move the suns to another location. And they gradually start to open again. So check if you have placed them too near to other aggressive corals like torch, bubble, hammers, etc which can extend long tentacles at night.

sigh mine is a 2 feet tank, kinda there's only one place or so to put them and I made sure they were no where NEAR the bubble and the octopi is placed way above it so it definitely can't reach the suns.. sigh .. now it seems even more closed up. :( Just now after I had dipped it in a seperate container and squirted zooplankton with msysis which I doubt it ate any, I put it back into the main tank and it seemed as though it was going to open.. and then my stupid shrimp went to disturb it and it closed up again... Previously even with the shrimp around, it would still open.. but since yesterday it's closed.. sigh.. praying hard it will not up lorry. :( almost 2 weeks in the same spot and all was well till thursday. :(

thanks for the advice anyway.

cheers, Desi

I finally found out that my suns DO open up! BUT but but ONLY during late at night after lights off! kaoz man! I took a torch light at 2am one day and shine at them then saw they all opened up so beautifully.. I was so happy. Just too bad they dowan open up during the day. I think they really don't like bright lights. So now i can only admire them after lights off. hahaha. They're sprouting tiny baby new shoots on their existing bodies. Think its growing :)

Sun corals can withstand direct flow, of course not right in front of it.

Sun corals can be train to open at specific times if u regulate their feeding

A Research article concluded that sun coral open their tentacles when lights off and close when lights on is mostly due to the rise in the temperature and not so much of others. However i would like to add it is also due to the mircoscope food that comes out when lights are off.

U can alternative try like me, have flows directed to them and have their tentacles 24 / 7

usually for new suns , i will put them n a tupperware for acclimatising and at the same time bubble and dump tons of cyclopeeze and henry reef gourmet.

since they probably have not been fed for awhile in their holding tank at their LFS

see how happy and thick they are and the actually finish up all the food and clear up the water

and this is them already in the tank

just a few hours after putting them in the main display , the normal suns are old and have been there for couple of months, 3 more pcs of the super suns are elsewhere in the tank and cant be seen in this pic
