Hi All, I saw this article in Straits Time Home section today, it says that Lionfish is one of the fish banned from sale in Singapore, is this true?

Banned for sale at local pet shops:

# Any venomous fish, such as the marine cat fish, lion fish and stone fish.

Foxface and other rabbitfishes, scorpion fish, toadfish, goosefish aka Rhinopias?!

# Fish with spines, other sharp appendages or teeth that can cause injury, such as the scorpion fish, piranha and moray eel.

Tangs, surgeonfishes, maroon clownfish, triggerfish, porcupine puffers!? Basically all fish have spines such as dorsal spines that can cause injury.

# Fish that have a large territorial range in their natural habitat, such as sharks, dogfish and stingrays.

Ok this is the only point that made sense.

If they want to protect youngsters from such fish, an age verification prior to purchase would suffice. As usual, the least troublesome method of banning everything comes into play.

Surprisingly they left out poisonous fish, are'nt the lawmakers afraid that hobbyists would end up eating their pufferfish?

It's in the conditions of the Pet Shop Licence stipulated by AVA...supposedly been in effect since 2006?

they snatch many opportunities and has many venomous tactics to compete for jobs from us

Just some thoughts....if we ban foreigners, who will be our maids, cleaners, rubbish collectors and construction workers? for the professionals, do we have all the headcounts, skills and expertise required to fill all the vacancies in MNCs?

And should other countries also ban Singaporeans from working in their own countries?

Yah.. would be pretty narrow minded to stop foreigners to work here.. they do jobs which most locals would stay clear.. impose a tighter control maybe.

anyway back to the topic.. Lion fishes??!! My favorite. They were the reason why I started this hobby.. besides the fact that I failed many times .

Anyway, i think banning lionfish sucks, applying the same principle, dogs also bite and there are more reported cases of dog biting people than lionfish biting people. must we ban dog also?

sorry, off topic on the foreign talent...IMO, this foreign talent issue must be treated with care. For specialist, i do agree we need their experty and experience and singaporeans will gain. Nevertheless, there are cases where such foreign talents are not up to the mark and thus making singaporeans unhappy. For those ground work, i think low wage iand how the society respect the job nature are reasons why not much singaporeans are willing to take up. Hence, bosses here have to choose to go overseas to recruit. Cost will be lower and thus stopping further for singaporeans to take up the job. Hopefully social and ethical problem dont surface as this is likely to take time to surface. At times, i do sympathise these foreign workers and their attitudes are much better than singaporeans. When they come to singapore, they really paid a price to work and they will not throw MC, etc to disrupt operation. Think is a matter of striking a balance but the balance is not determined by us....

back to the topic.....think the control might have losen and who knows AVA is monitoring the forum and tightening the checks again....hence shops will stop selling.....lol....better delete the thread and let the matter rest.........wahahaha....
