New to marine tank

Recommended Posts

Hey I recently fell in love with marine tanks and plan on setting up a FOWLR tank ASAP. First, I've got some questions to ask. I've been told that if i were to have a protein skimmer and live rocks for filtration, I do not need to have any other filters. Is this true? I am intending on getting this skimmer http://www.proteinskimmer.com/Product%20Pa...emora%20Pro.htm and a pump is included. Is this skimmer too expensive?? Any cheaper ones with same ability? I've read that many of u have pumps and my question is wad are they for and is wavemaker really necessary. Im planning on keeping a porcupine puffer with some other fishes. For LR, do i have to cure it if i were to buy it from MARIne Life or something?? Can it be put directly into my main tank to help in the cycling process? To the cycling part.. After adding substrate and filling up my tank with SW, I add in my purchased LR and start my skimmer to begin the cycle? LR might decay rite and i remove the dead organisms? It ends when no ammonia is detected and this is when i can add in livestock??

Thanks.

Its me again. ....lol....as usual, my opinion but not professional advice. . . lol....

IMO, you still need filtration system to filter bigger particles and let skimmer skim off smaller particles. For the skimmer mentioned, not senior enough to comment but i think you can google to see reviews. Cheaper one, you have to search the market for second hand. But skimmer is one important equipment for marine. If you need advice, maybe you can post yr tank dimension, etc and for senior to comment.

For live rock, mixed feeling. If pointed out by some snr, the purpose is to keep those live bacterias to assist you in keeping the water parameter and get it stablise(i learned from my friend that he will cure live rock which mean making it a dead rock cos he dont like the parasite as he is keeping corals which some parasites can topple decorate, disturb or eat the coral). While these parasites can be caught using trap but not everytime it will be succcesful in catching them. But since u are keeping fish only, it should be ok. The smell or decay will help in cycling the water and the skimmer will help to cleanse the water or do water change. Anyway, live rock is easily available with more choices as not many shop will sell treated or dead rock(based on my experience).

The cycling process you mentioned seems okay. Based on book, NO will rise and fall to low or zero?, that means yr tank is cycled and can put LS. Usually weeks to months....and some bo chap....wahahaha....wave maker is not necessary but good in aerating the water and minimise certain algae growth on the glass panel and sand bed. It helps to make your tank looks nicer with coral, main LPS, to perform wave effect....and if you are keeping hard coral like SPS, wave maker is important. U keeping fish, so up to you....personally it is good becos a layer of oil or dirt will form on water surface...will surface skimmer or wave, it will help in circulation and remove them...so less stagnant.....also can like fish exercise...but puffer might not like it....puffer ...must be careful...not sure easy to keep or not....hehe.....

Hey thanks for your reply. Anyway what is a powerhead? Is it a wave maker? And do you know where i can get the cheapest LR? If u dun mind, mind posting the rates?

err.....lol....

i THINK power head is more like a pump for those filter, FR, etc.....more concentrated force.....but i think you can use that to create circulation but doubt u will see any fish so strong to swim to the pump(came across my mind but didnt try). For wave maker, as the name implies, to stimulate waves in the ocean.....LR....cheap one....maybe iwarna, T95....or second hand from the forum .... rates depend on your comfort zone.....Coral Farm can sell rock for above $100 that is in nice shape and big piece....check with those decom reefer and ask some free rock from them lor... there are kind soul around.......
