6 FT TANK SET UP !!

hi guys,

after 2 yrs ona 2 ft tank im taking the plunge to get a bigger n hopefully much better and stable reef tank

im aiming for a 6 ft x 2 ft x 2 ft tank with a

4 ft x 18' x 2 ft sump

all equipment except chiller to be in sump

i need advise on how to ensure no flooding on pwer failer aka close loop circuit..

and the equipment best suited for the the tank voume of water

the tank will be initally a lps tank gradually shifting towards sps when the tank matures.

any input would be greatly appreciated !!

For long term wise it better to replace the bio ball with LR.

To prevent flooding u can use a check valve or drill a hole at the outlet of the return.

From the pic i don't see any close loop system.

also another q man.... this dsb... once the low oxygen bacteria establishes.. it is OK that the lower portions is blackish right.. but i cannot stir the sand bed anymore or hydrogen sulphide will be released into tank. is that right? have never used dsm b4 lah, paiseh.. i am a more skimm it all the way kinda reefer haha

Using a bare bottom tank gives u more control.

However, DSB do work, i will leave the black spot as it is. Hydrogen sulphide danger is over-rated.

Its been said in wet wet media.

Well a barebottom tank allows u to place a wavemaker at the bottom of the tank, to wash the detritus, dirt, sediments & waste at the tank bottom and attempt to keep most of them in suspension so they have a chance to enter the sump.

With sand, most waste and dirt gets trap in the sand until they dissolve. However you get more places for copepods, amphipods & crustacean to breed and feed in.

1. Chiller is best to have it draw from and back to main tank. Why waste the extra flow in your sump ? Even if your return pump fail, temperature will still be taken care.

2. Never believe in those check valve as you will never know when there will be a small snail hiding inside. (JMO)

3. Make your design is easy for you to do 10-20% water change

4. Get the right tank maker

your design and concept looks very similar to my setup at home.. we use a 4ft sump as well.. with the same number of compartments..

what i did was to design the divider in the "dsb" area to have the flow right at the middle, so flow across the dsb is much greater, as compared to overflowing it only at the top area.. as well as across the chaetos.. just my humble opinion..

as attached is my sump design, just my simple setup, maybe can give u more 'ideas'.. its nothing impressive though..

What I mean by more control is that, if in the future you have a nitrate problem, if you are running bare bottom, you will have no sand bed to push the blame to, hahahha.

Do note that, without sand bed, some fishes can't be kept, jawfish etc...

If ya need sand bed, either <1 inch

or > 4 inch[DSB]
