2ft set up

Recommended Posts

I got a 2 by 1.5 bare tank and a overhead filter.I also intend to buy a cooling fan and 2ft T5 light set this weekend.

Is there any problem with the above equipment to set up a reef tank with hard and soft coral.

Please kindly advise.

Definitely NOT hard corals, soft corals like mushrooms/zoos are alright with your 2ft T5 and colling fan.

Overhead filter may just about make it for the time being, you will deinfitely want to upgrade to better equipment as you proceed along with your hobby.

Good Luck!

I do not have a sump tank.Since top filter is not that good, I will change it to a cannister.

I find it strang, how come nobody use top filter. What are the disadventages using it?

Can I keep hard coral using only cooling fan without chiller?

How much do I need to spend on rock to fill up a 2 by 1.5 tank?

nah dun recommand u try hard coral... they require proper knowledge on water chemistry like how to maintain Ca level KH level and Mg level etc... for a start just do softies... they are less demanding... no sure fire way of measuring how much rocks u need... just buy enough for you to scape your tank... but dun buy too many... coz your corals might come attached to pieces of rock... we prefer the space up there on the tank so that the light can be positioned properly so that the whole tank get the light... OHF takes up too much space... another reason is OHF does not increase the water vol of the tank... in marine the bigger the vol the more stable the tank will be..... they could be more reasons...

If I attach a fan at 45degree on my 2by 1.5 tank. How many percent of water do I need to replace back within 3 day?

hi no hard and fast rule as rate of evaporation depends on humildity of your area too... not just on the fan... normally what we do is mark the water level once we mix the salt to get the desired salinity... then we top up water regularly to the mark so as to maintain the salinity... salt dun evaporate... only water do... so once the water evaporate the remaining water becomes saltier and saltier... until we top up... to maintain a stable salinity we need to do regular top up to the mark

I use a timer to switch on the fan for about 30% of the time, I still need to top up about 1 litre a day. But it is quite effective tank can reduce about 2 deg C. I have not choice to do this because of the hot weather. Use low wattage equipment in the tank helps too. The corals (LPS) do not do extend properly once the tank temp consistently raises above 30 deg C. Mushrooms may be OK but I am not sure of Zoa.

The above is just based on my limited experience.

i agree with bro Whitefish, dangerous for LPS if ur temperature hits 30 or more..

i've tried mushrooms with 30, they're alright.. but never tried it before with those more exotic mushrooms..

4 t5 definitely can support mushrooms and zoas (my old tank), but i would advice not to go for those exotic US zoas as u need to be concern with ur temperature.. the type of t5 u use would have a great difference too..

having an overflow system would greatly enhance ur water conditions..

just my 2cents from my personal limited experience as well.. :)

31-32 is just my estimation due to the hot weather.Anyone using cannister on their 2ft tank with 4tube T5 can advise their tank temp?

I suggest you put a temperature probe to put in the tank (slightly more than $10). Every tank is different because of the size, lighting, equipment and environment temperature. The tank is usually about 2 deg C above the room temperature because of the equipments

luckily i manage to get the cannister running.C328 selling 2ft T5 4 tube light set for $75, think so far the cheapest i seen. This week might go get it.

A 2nd hand chiller cost abt $150-160 in here but roughly how much is electricity bill?

Also, how to do I stack up the rock n fasten the mushroom on it?

Hi Bro,

Me newbie also. Started off with similar setup as yours and later upgraded to 2 ft cube. Now trying to decom old tank. As mentioned by most of the seniors, you should take note. Another thing which i think you need is skimmer to further enhance the water condition. Don't be impulsive and do your study before going into it. Happy Reefing.

to fasten the mushies to the rock, u need to have epoxy, underwater "superglue"..

Tank : 4 X 2 X 2 with low iron front panel and external overflow

Skimmer : BK SM200 with waste collector

Return Pumps : Red Dragon 6m3 and Ehiem 1262

FR : 2 X Deltec 509 & powered by AB2000

Nitrate Filter : Deltec NF 509 and tee off from AB2000

Calcium R'tor : Deltec PF 501 with RM secondary chamber

Kalkwasser R'tor : Deltec KM500

Chiller : Pansonic 1 HP Compressor with 20m titanium Coil

Wave Makers : 4 X Tunze 6055 with 7096 & Vortec MP40w

Controller : GHL Profilux

Lighting : ATI Powermodule 10 or 8 tubes

Water Top-up : Water Top-Up tank powered by Tunze Osmolator

External Monitor : American Pinpoint pH and Temp. Monitor for main tank and GHL Profilux Controller to measure temp, pH, Redox

Ozonizer : Sander C50

UV : Corallife 6x

Algae Scrubbler

bro sim lim tower have a few shops selling very good fans, they use it for industrial purpose. there 1 hardware shop located at 2nd level, the uncle there can DIY the wire length for you so no need extension. go for those made in japan brand. i've 3 and is currently still serving me well

PL and T5 are totally diff.

try reading more abt them. T5 released less heat compare to PL and can penetrate greater depth too.

:D

Will the blue tube give out a very blue effect on the tank as I also need to use it for other purpose.
