Brown Algae all over!

Hi,

Need some help.

i'm now still cycling my tank and its around 2 weeks already. I've put in live rocks in the tank already.

My tank is 6ftx2.5ftx2.5ft with a refugium of 5ftx2ft. I've tested my ammonia is about 0 now but the nitrite is about 0.25

No live stock right now. 2 x 250W MH light is on 7 hours a day and refugium light is on 7x24.

I've noticed lots of brown algae are forming in the main tank and the refugium. is there anything that i should do or can do to remove the brown algae?

If I am not wrong, you do not have to switch on your lights when you are cycling.

Anyway, I used to have diatom problem too. After adding in a protein skimmer and doing fortnightly water change, the problem is reduced.

Yup like all the bros here said, diatoms are normal during initiate cycling period. You dont need to switch on the lights during cycling not unless you are cycling with live stock (corals) inside! In the initial stage, the nitrate will climb and that will cause a little algae outbreak. But thats normal. you will go through a few stages. First is the brown, then the red follow by the green. Do a 50% water change after cycling and before you add live stock to reduced the nitrate level. best to keep it under 10ppm. 5 would even be better.

Just maintain a routine and do weekly or monthly water changes. afterwards to maintian good water quality. Show pic of your tank leh, you live in HDB or private?? I also want to upgrade to big tank leh but concern bout HDB regulation. Anything above 600kg must get permit! your machiam 1500kg!! :P

Hi,

Thanks for all your reply. Really appreciate that.

Pictures for the tank? Its still empty, only water and rocks. I'll try to post some when its setup.

I'm staying in a HDB, not private. Currently i have a 4ftx2.5x1.5ft for fish only marine tank, and the other one is the 6ft that i've mentioned.

i think it's better to cycle with your lights.

what happened was during my cycling, my lights was not ready yet. it did go thru the diatoms phase. then when my diatoms disappeared, i switched on my halides and t5, the diatoms resurfaced and the cyling continues!

so u shd cycle with your lights on.
