Hi all,

Need to find out can NSW be stored in a container without circulating with pump?

Cos i'm using NSW for water change for my 1ft x 1ft nano tank.

And each time alot was left over. So was thinking can it be stored in a container and use in the next water change(1week later).

Pls advise, thanks!!!

I may be wrong but I doubt it can last a week in a container. Max maybe 1 or 2 days....

Btw, I think this should go under General Reefkeeping..???

It's better for you to pour out all the water into a pail, you should have a little pump for circulation. Else it'll become stale water.

Just wondering, if it's a small tank, why dun you just buy by per plastic bag, that one should be $1 per pack.

Even if cannot finish, just throw away. (also not too heart-pain).

The other alternative is to set up another nano? Maybe to keep predator fish? like lionfish/frogfish/mantis shrimp... just a thought...

Hi bro,

Yes it's a 1ft x 1ft nano tank. I was thinking of changing 20% to 30% of water weekly but might not have the time to

go down to pasir ris farm to buy NSW every week. If store the water in a pail without circulation what will happen to the water.

And will it build up anmonia? Pls advise, thanks!

yes, it will becos there are living organisms in the water and without air, they will die resulting in ammonia and nitrite.

i think the best is to use salt mix. i am using salt mix for my 6ft tank. u need then u mix so dun need to worry so much.

and urs is a small tank, a small pack can last u for long.

u wun even need to worry abt going down to pasir ris.

if u worry abt the quality, then get a good brand.maybe instant ocean but dun get redsea.

if u worry abt chlorine, get seachem's prime. good priduct.

if u worry abt tapwater, then get one big distilled water from ntuc or from some of the contact here.

they do have those office waterbottle for dispenser, just that u need to put deposit.

Cheers.

Hi,

How come living organisms in water die can contribute to ammonia and nitrite?

I may be wrong, but I heard of ppl collecting seawater and store them in some container for a number of weeks with the intention to kill all parasite and bacteria. So, at the end of the weeks, replace fish tank water with the stored seawater (supposedly clean and 'good' water).

Just trying to learn. Since there is always leftover, a suggestion - why not test it out :thanks: :thanks:

BTW, Leftover fresh water from the tap, used to replenish evaporated fish tank water was stored for few days already and no air circulation. Just tested stored water for ammonia and nitrite. All showing zero. Also recall in those days where water was stored for few days because of water rationing, ppl drink and cook with these stored water. Nothing happen but all ppl surviving ...

Anybody has result that is otherwise. :thanks:

Hi Bro Victor007,

If storing NSE in container for days without circulation will kill the beneficial living organisms and resulting in ammonia and nitrite problem,

then will is those imported package live sand selling at LFS claim that there are living organisms in it. Shouldn't all living organisms dead.

Correct me if i'm wrong. Pls advise?

Imo, using tapwater as top up might contribute algae problems...increase of slicates and PO4.

I prefer uses distill water as top up...till now, less cleaning of my tank glasses.... :D

hope these helps... :D

Premix salt water is good cos with all minerals that a reef tank required (depends on which brand)

Seawater is cost effective and fast...but beware of where you getting from...i try one of the LFS seawater...IMO, not too bad...but dun expect certain chemical properties to be perfect.... now using even since started back reefing...till now, i have no complaints! :D
