I used a pair of tweezers and battled with it for quite awhile. It went back and forth, like fencing, and I could actually feel its "claws" or "fangs" attacking my tweezers. When it retaliated the very first time, I was shocked and pulled my hand out of the water, causing quite a splash. :paiseh: Finally decided to pull the whole rock out and dip it in a small bucket of DI water. It didn't want to come out of his hole at first, but after poking with the tweezers, he jumped right out (yes, I was startled by it again :pinch: ) and there it is, his last dying moments. Cheers! :yeah:

Can someone kindly tell me what is this?

And of course, this lead to more hunting... I was having trouble keeping my gobies. They would die the very next day with torn fins just beside the rocks. At first I thought it was aggression, but I have only common clownfishes, cleaner shrimps and hermit crabs. I checked my water perimeters and they were ok. Then I noticed some movement in the live rocks. Nuisance crabs! They must have attacked them when they are in their dart "holes" during the night.

Managed to catch one today. Hahahahahahaha... Die, you evil thing!

Oops... unfortunately, its been flushed down the toilet. But seriously, why would you guys keep something like that...? I personally feel that it looks more like a pest than a pet, but that's just me.

Its kept in a species tank for the feeding time sake. It should be fun seeing them feed. And you should see how the peacock mantis or a really huge one looks like.

Why do we use "My 2 cents worth" when 1 cents are not legal tender in Singapore anymore? Shouldn't it be 5 cents worth?

"Its easier to blame the 'mantis' or crabs in the tank for missing & dead livestocks.."

especially when its feeding on live bait like crab, crayfish etc. you should see how they attack.

they are very intelligent. admirable. but not in a reef tank.

turn on ur volume.

If a man could beat his own fantasy. Then to only breed in captivity. Then its pointless.

Genesis 1:20

And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that has life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. And God created great whales, and every living creature that moves, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

Holy crap! Those were the sounds that I heard when I did some "fencing" with it. It was like 2 swords clashing, except to a much smaller degree. That's why I retracted my hand at first contact. Gave me a shock. Its speed and accuracy is scary. I'd rather not mess with this guy. But the one in the video is such a huge assed beauty.

*shake hand*

i totally agree with you.

For something that looks so good... it's a ferocious hunter! (Swift and deadly) - is this some army unit's slogan?? heck it, anyway...

There're 2 main groups of mantis (based on my limited knowledge).

1) the smashers - more common ones... they use the 'hammer' to knock it's victim unconscious before consuming it... lovely.

2) the piercers - this group uses it's 'spears' to pierce thru it's victims, pulling them into their burrows....

Oh yah... i used to feed mollies to them, then buy turbo snails for them... wah.. expensive to maintain...

There was once, just for the fun of it, i bought a blue lobster to see who will win... they fought for a good 30mins, taking breaks in between (maciam those old-skool kungfu show).

Eventually, Mantis lost one of it's hammer. Lobster lost it's life.

Have you ever tried putting your hand in the tank...? :eyebrow:

Maybe you are typing with a hook instead of fingers now... hehehe...

How much does it cost to get one as shown in the video? Is it even possible to put corals in or clean the tank without being mistaken for food...?

Imagine, using your finger nails to crack open a snail's shell... the mantis can do it in one move. Putting my hand in the tank... haha.. no way dude!

If i remember correctly, a peacock mantis cost like $5 from Reborn? Or issit $15, cannot remember liao wor... it's been at least 4-5 years ago.

Yes, you can still keep corals but not recommended... Coz the mantis typically will help you shift the stuff... mantis likes to burrow into the sand, and he'll move LRs above the burrow to 'take cover'. Thus, not recommended to have corals...

Sounds like a high risk pet... I'm just glad I got rid of the one in my tank. :whistle
