Dear Reefers,

Just wonder whether how many among us believe in adding bacteria cultures.

Please check below link after you have voted.

Dear reefers,

For me I periodically (after water change) use the below products depending on what's available:

1) Preis Baktoplan

2) Prodibio Bio Digest

3) RowaBac M

Please do share the brands that you use and the dosing regime if any.

TIA

Gouldian ;)

Yes. its necessary...

There are all tigers and deers, imagine all the forest are wiped out slowly... the deers too and then the tigers will follow.

Thanks Stanley, Interesting analogy.. :)

Was told another analogy from my friend: "Bacteria cultures is like Yakult/Vitagen, after you drink you will have easier bowels. If you forget to drink, shit still comes out the next day." :D :D :D

dun believe it unless it is cryopreserved or fresh off culture

Yes there are. started using one. No brand but recommended by a LFS. Supposed to be bacteria in cryopreserved state.

Why do we use "My 2 cents worth" when 1 cents are not legal tender in Singapore anymore? Shouldn't it be 5 cents worth?

If I put in Charcoal/Carbon as filter media, will it absorb all the Bacterial that I added in?

Kindly also advise what are the filter media for my sump tank during the cycling process?

Tks

Hi 'successnowhere', charcoal/carbon will not absorb or kill bacteria but they may remove some desired trace elements nfrom your water. So unless you are having problems with keeping your water clear eg. yellow water, you should not put too much charcoal in your sump. UV on the other hand, will kill bacteria and so you should limit the amount of uv time if you are using uv.

Bacteria will live in practically any porous media and hence live rocks, coral chips, bioballs, sand, etc. can be used during the cycling process which will normally take as long as 4-8 weeks if you are using marine salt. With natural sea water, a week or two should be good enough assuming the nsw is freshly taken from the sea. But my personal advice is for you to dose bacteria artificially. It works wonders and it can reduce your cycling time drastically. You can start adding fishes after 3 days and corals after 5 days.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Happy Reefing!

For fast cycling new tank, what brand of bacteria to added in to the tank to speed up the process?

Tks

I'LL SAID WATERLIFE but i still recomend you to let your tank take the full cycle min 4-6weeks before you add any LS. it a waste of money and sad to see them get sick and eventurly die imagine you're killing a life with your own hands.

So if can pls stick with it and "lun lun" for the 6 weeks

Like i may said even no matter how long you've cycle it still won't slove the problem if u don't do proper maintainance like water change cleaning of wool and water parameter check hope everything works just fine for you happy reefing

http://www.microbelift.com/bactvideowin.html

After watching the above video, I started looking for the Microbe-Lift Special Blend and manages to get my hands on a sample bottle.

Will try to start another thread (if time permits and can get hold of a camera) to post my experience with it. ;)

The added bacteria (if exist) can only survive on what is inside the tank. Meaning, their "food" source such as NH3, NO2. Theoretically, it is just a waste if you overdose (not according to tank size, but according to food available). Excess bacteria will die off and soon be consumed, causing nutrients spike and cloudy/green water etc.

It is not necessary to add bacteria in a mature tank as the "system" will balance itself, unless you are adding a huge amount of livestocks very suddenly.
