Cherm,

u can use a non-return valve but accordine to my experience, there will still be return but a small slow stream of water back. My sugesstion is to open an airhole near the return mouth of the piping so when air is collected with the backflow then will stop the siphon.

As most of the non-return valve sold in hardware store are spring type, it will be prone to RUST.

My 2 cents worth... cos i was planning a non-return valve but was stopped by my tank maker.

just a question,

will opening a air hole affect the flow rate? the air hole is in the water? or above the water surface?

those are called check valves.

there are different kinds.

spring type, ball type etc.

be warned, i used to use check valves but the output had be lessen to quite abit, thats why i gave up using.

Genesis 1:20

And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that has life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. And God created great whales, and every living creature that moves, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

Interestingly I just used a check valve in my return circuit. Had problems with output so I decided to remove the spring, which did the trick. There's no return when the weight of the water column is pushing the valve back in place, and the output from my pump is significantly better. Plus there's no downside of rusting springs.

can try getting tunze check valve. got 1 with a spring and was told its not suitable for marine, so they changed a new one with out spring, which can be use for marine.

Agrees with Jon, easiest solution is to buy an handheld electric drill.... problem solved.
