Two leading environmental organizations, Earthwatch Institute and Ocean Conservancy, have partnered on the SEE Turtles project to promote conservation of the world's endangered sea turtle populations. As all seven of the planet's species are under threat, the goal of the project is to demonstrate how public involvement in turtle conservation can have a bigger economic impact on local communities than traditional hunting.

Under "Destruction of reefs" They Add that "Collection" of marine coral species Are One of the reasons for Extinctionand destruction....They in the sense Book of Biology education and Other websites....

Is there anything we can do about this...? How do we make reefing an ( not against mother nature) kind of thing....

Must reefers be more aware of what they buy before they Buy?

Must reefers Be more responsible?

Guess as long as we are in this hobby, we are far from conservation, and is inevitably part of the destruction team of the fragile ocean coral reefs.

The only excpetion is prob buying only cultured SPS and corals, and farmed marine fishes. Also, selling and passing home cultured SPS around. And buying artificial liverocks like those lookalike ones sold in Golden Octopus.

l think what we can do is to minimise the destruction. Read more in forums and books and dun buy species and corals that we know will not last long in captivity. Buying less LPS as l think most of them are taken from the ocean and hard to propagrate.

It's like eating sharkfins. Many will argue saying that the shark was already killed and eating a bowl won't contribute much to help the sharks. Likewise, since corals and fishes are already taken from the ocean, buying 1-2 pcs won't cause much destruction.

The problem is when this is added up, it became a substantial amount of demand that more sharks (fishes and corals) will be harvested from the wild. Of course, a few reefers are able to help in breeding certain fishes and corals to be shared around, but it's only the minority few.
