In tank water flow

Just got myself a Tunze 6025. Installed it and turned it on! Begeezers! The darned thing can really blow. It's stirring up all the sand and detritus!

Question to ask is, is there such a thing as too much flow? Like say, when i start to add LS to the tank, is there too much current for the fish? And how about corals? Can they tolerate direct flow, or should the flow be aimed away from the corals so they only get a light breeze in the slipstream?

Is there a need to point it so that flow is upwards or downwards? Any specifics I need to look out for?

Tank size is a 2ft 140litre, 37G tank

Tried the search function, but all I got was unrelated :D

Cheers all

of course there might be too much flow, but i think 1 6025 is not enough for your set, you might need 2..

just dun point at the corals but let the flow bounce off the tank walls to create a mixture of directions in the tank is tahe best.

of course, it will be best if you can have a controller..

Already with one 6025 the particles in the water are going crazy! Some sort of brownian motion lol

How about corals like zoas? How much flow can they take?

What about mushrooms?

Been searching for this kind of information, but it's rather difficult to digest. For eg, for zoas, the recommendations I find are generally moderate to high flow. But what the heck if high flow! And mushrooms I presume are low flow organisms...

I have the same 6025 and using it in a 25g tank. Yes, it is very strong and I suspect that the white particles suspended in my tank is due to this. Part of my sand always seem to be blown to front corner of the tank. Someone ever comment to me that 6025 may be too strong for my tank. I bought this based on LFS recommendation.

I am still trying to adjust the direction to find out which is the best that do not disturb my sand. However beside the sand and the particles problem, my corals are doing well. There is both zoas and mushroom in my tank. I find that there is more flow on the right side (bounce off the wall) of my tank. I think you just need to find the correct position to put the correct type of coral.

But pls don't take my word for it as I only have the tank for 6 weeks.

I managed to find a direction which doesn't stir up too much sand and particles, and also doesn't seem to cause any high flow area right where I would expect to place corals.

Mushrooms blowing in the wind, is that ok?

with 1 wavemaker, you might want to have it work with the output of your return pump to have a desirable water movement in the tank.

anyway, i suppose you have very fine sand in your system to be disturb by the wavemaker. but after awhile, they will settle.

i suppose as long as all the corals are somewhat moving in the water caused by the movements in the tank and opening happily, they will be ok.

please be careful not to point the wavemaker at them at close range as they will be suffering. also, be careful with dead zones without movements.

mushrooms prefer low flow area, like on the sandbed, and zoas in high flow areas will tend to grow longish, depending if you like them that way.

my 2 cents
