General Queries For Fish & Life Rocks Tank?

Recommended Posts

Dear all

I have a 3 feet fish with life rocks tank and would appreciate some advice on the following queries which I have:-

1) How do you measure the litre of a tank?

2) Are shrimps/lobsters/abalone/sea cucumber suitable in a fish and life rocks tank? I do not have a chiller

3) What sort of chemicals are essential and good to have as add on for a fish and life rocks tank?

4) How to determine Bio-Load of a tank and how do you know if a tank is over crowded?

5) How do you differentiate dead and life rocks?

6) What are Tonga branches suitable for?

I would seriously appreciate if someone could share their thoughts and views on the above.

Thank you.

1)That one some web got the thing to measure.I think this web also got.

2)Unless of course you have a triggerfish i say it is safe.

3)KH buffer to maintain ph.

4)When you see ur ph is below the safe zone.

5)Dead rocks are rocks which doesn't contain any beneficial bacteria.Live rocks are rocks that contain beneficial bacterias.

6)They are good when you want to stack corals.

1) L x W X H would give you the capacity in Litres. You can also use one of the web conversion.....for me, before i put in the rocks, i normally will measure the displacement of the water on a seperate container, so that gives me the volume to substract from the main water body....

2) shrimps/lobsters/abalone/sea cucumber are more sensitive to salinity. So might have to watch the evaporation rate if you not using chiller. I think if temperature below 29 should still be ok.

3) no chemical...in fact should throw in carbon to absorb all sort of chemical

4) bio-load would be hard to tell....normally, you will observer lots of algae growing, lots of aggression even by fish that normally co-exist ...etc....use your best judgment as the ablility to handle bio-load is pretty much dependent on your equipment. i personally do not think that PH is a good indication of high bio-load...

5) Dead rock would eventually be populated with live.

6) really its a design and taste thing....also some people also might argue that tonga branches are from dead coral so more light....

Dear Angelfishlover and TinEng

Thank you very much for sharing your views with me. They are really helpful for a beginner like me.

BTW, TinEng, I have the following query when you mentioned "throw in carbon to absorb all sort of chemical"

Carbon - usually available what sort of form, i.e. solid or liquid?

I am changing seawater every 2 weeks. However I realised that my Blueface and juv Koran Angel seems to have dewveloped HLLE. Any proposed treatment methods?

4) I've got this formula for bioload from somewhere: 1 inch of fish per 5 gallons of water.

Another formula is if you are keeping a REEF tank, then its 2.5cm per 18litres of water; otherwise its 2.5cm per 9l.
